The menu

Cod and haddock in two sizes, plaice, hake and a scampi of Whitby wholetail; pies from a bakery in Dinas Powys; chips from Pembrokeshire potatoes, mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy made here; a children's menu; vegetarian and vegan options from the separate fryer. Every price and the fourteen allergens are on the menu page.

A plate of fish and chips: a large golden battered haddock fillet, thick-cut chips, mushy peas, a lemon wedge and tartare on a white plate by a café window with the sea beyond

A fish and chip menu should fit on a board you can read from the queue, and ours does. Cod and haddock are the reason people come; plaice, hake and the scampi are for people who have had the cod; the pies are for the person who does not eat fish; and the sides are made in the back, because tinned peas are a crime.

The fish is MSC-certified cod and haddock from four named boats, frozen at sea and thawed slowly in our cold room overnight, skinned and boned here, in a regular size of about two hundred and twenty grams and a small of a hundred and fifty. Battered to order in our own batter of flour, cornflour, a raising agent and sparkling water, and fried in beef dripping at a hundred and eighty degrees for six minutes. Plaice and hake when the boats land them; scampi from Whitby, wholetail, not reformed. Chips cut from Pembrokeshire Maris Pipers, blanched in the afternoon and finished to order.

Pies from a bakery in Dinas Powys: steak, chicken and mushroom, cheese and onion. Sides made in the back: mushy peas from marrowfats soaked overnight, curry sauce from a recipe Dai brought back from Cardiff in 1989, gravy, tartare. A children's meal of a small fish or two sausages with chips and a drink. Vegetarian and vegan battered halloumi, tofu "tofish" and the veg fritter come from the separate fryer in vegetable oil. Every price, every allergen, on the menu page and the allergens page.

Questions about the menu

Why is the fish frozen?

Because frozen at sea, within hours of landing, on a boat that stays out a week, is fresher than "fresh" fish that spent four days on ice in a lorry. Every good chip shop in Britain does the same; we just say so.

Is the beef dripping vegetarian?

No. The main range is beef dripping. Anything vegetarian or vegan, and the gluten-free batter, is fried in the separate fryer in vegetable oil; ask for it and say why.

Pick a collection time from the slots still open, every fifteen minutes through each shift, say what you would like, and it is fried to the slot and waiting in a bag with your name on it at the end of the counter.
