Forty seats looking at the sea, plates and proper cutlery, a pot of tea, and fish and chips at a table

The sit-in café

Forty seats in navy booths and at the window, looking across the Esplanade to the pier and the Severn: fish and chips on a plate with bread and butter and a pot of tea, the children's menu with crayons, ice cream from a dairy in the Vale. No bookings except for groups of eight or more; dogs on the terrace in summer.

The sit-in café of a seaside fish and chip shop with navy booths, formica tables and big windows onto the promenade and the sea, a family eating fish and chips

The café is the front room with the view: forty seats in navy booths and along the window, a counter for the teapots, and the Severn beyond the railings. Fish and chips on a plate with proper cutlery taste different from the paper, and the people who come in on a wet Tuesday in February agree.

Sit-in is the menu on a plate, 80p more than takeaway because of the washing up, or the plated meal: regular cod or haddock and chips, peas, bread and butter and a pot of tea or a soft drink for £13.90. The children's menu comes with crayons and a sheet of the Esplanade to colour. Ice cream from a dairy in the Vale in six flavours; the knickerbocker glory on Sundays. Wine and beer by the glass, a Welsh lager on draught.

No bookings except for groups of eight or more, who should ring. High chairs, a changing table, and a step-free entrance from the Esplanade. In summer, four tables on the terrace where dogs are welcome and the gulls are a hazard we warn you about. The café closes half an hour before the window, so the last sit-in order is at 1:30pm and 8:30pm.

Questions about the café

Can I book a table?

Only for eight or more; ring. Otherwise it is first come, and the window tables go first.

Is it accessible?

Step-free from the Esplanade, with an accessible toilet and space at the end booths for a wheelchair.

Book a slot, skip the queue.

Pick a collection time from the slots still open, every fifteen minutes through each shift, say what you would like, and it is fried to the slot and waiting in a bag with your name on it at the end of the counter.
