Every allergen, on the websiteThe fourteen allergens for every item on the menu are on the allergens page and on the board in the shop, kept to the recipe. Ask at the counter and we will show you the ingredient sheet.

The shop

Six things we do, each with its own page.

All six

01

The menu

Cod and haddock in two sizes, plaice, hake and a scampi of Whitby wholetail; pies from a bakery in Dinas Powys; chips from Pembrokeshire potatoes, mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy made here; a children's menu; vegetarian and vegan options from the separate fryer. Every price and the fourteen allergens are on the menu page.

Cod and chips £11.

02

Gluten-free Tuesdays

Every Tuesday the separate fryer does the whole menu in our gluten-free batter of rice flour and cornflour, with its own oil, baskets, scoops and a blue-handled set of everything, and a cook who does only that. On any other day we will do a gluten-free fish on request, with a ten-minute wait while the fryer comes up to temperature.

The same prices as the main menu; no supplement.

03

The sit-in café

Forty seats in navy booths and at the window, looking across the Esplanade to the pier and the Severn: fish and chips on a plate with bread and butter and a pot of tea, the children's menu with crayons, ice cream from a dairy in the Vale. No bookings except for groups of eight or more; dogs on the terrace in summer.

Sit-in prices are 80p more than takeaway, with bread and butter and a cup of tea or a soft drink included in the "plated" meal at £13.

04

Family deals

The family deal for two adults and two children at £34: two regular cod or haddock and chips, two children's meals, two mushy peas or curry sauces and four drinks. The big one for two adults and three children at £46. Book a collection slot and it is wrapped and waiting; or eat in.

Two adults and two children £34; two adults and three children £46; swap the fish for a pie at no charge, or upgrade to haddock for 80p each.

05

Catering

A fish supper for a wedding evening, a birthday or a works do: our catering van with its own range parks outside and fries to order for twenty to a hundred and fifty, cod or haddock and chips in cones or boxes with the sides and the sauces, from £13 a head. Or collected from the shop in insulated boxes for smaller parties.

From £13 a head for twenty or more, fried at your door within twenty miles; collected boxes from £11 a head for ten or more.

06

Sustainability

Our cod and haddock come from four boats fishing MSC-certified stocks in the North Sea, the Barents Sea and off Iceland, frozen at sea; the plaice and hake from Brixham day boats when they land. Potatoes from a farm in Pembrokeshire, the dripping to a biodiesel firm in Newport, and paper, card and wooden forks instead of plastic since 2018.

Sustainability costs us about 40p a portion more than the cheapest fish on the market.

Collection slots

Book on the order page

Every fifteen minutes through each shift, at least twenty minutes from now. Fried to the slot and waiting in a bag with your name on it at the end of the counter. Nothing left today; the next slots are Wednesday 21 October:

A separate small stainless steel fryer in a fish and chip shop kitchen, a cook lowering a basket with a battered fillet, blue-handled utensils hanging beside

Gluten-free Tuesdays

A second fryer, and a day of its own.

Every Tuesday the whole menu comes out of the separate fryer in our rice-flour batter, with its own oil, baskets, scoops and a blue-handled set of everything, and a cook who does only that. Any other day we will do a gluten-free fish on request with a ten-minute wait. No supplement, ever.

  • Chips through the same separate fryer
  • Peas, curry sauce and gravy gluten-free every day
  • Honest about the risk: we are not a certified gluten-free kitchen

How we work

Four things that are true of the range.

Cooked to order, never left

Fish goes into the batter when the order comes in, not before. The warming cabinet is for chips and the odd pie at the top of a rush, not for fish that has been waiting since six.

The price on the board

Every price is on the menu page and the board, VAT included, the same at the window and on the phone. A small cod is a small cod; we do not do a "regular" that is really a large.

Allergens kept to the recipe

When the recipe changes the allergens page changes the same day. The gluten-free fryer has its own oil, baskets, scoops and a blue-handled set, and a person who does only that on a Tuesday.

The bits go somewhere

Batter scraps go to the gulls only in the bin, because the council asked; the dripping goes to a biodiesel firm in Newport; what fish is left at nine goes to the night shelter in Cardiff. Very little is left at nine.

Collection slots

Book the 6:15 slot on the website at lunchtime, walk past the queue at the window at 6:14, bag with my name on it, still too hot to hold. The haddock is the best on this coast and I have done the research from Tenby to Porthcawl.

Gluten-free

Coeliac for twenty years and this was the first chip shop fish I had eaten since I was a child. Separate fryer, blue-handled everything, and they talked me through it without me asking. We drive over every other Tuesday.

Catering

The van came to our wedding evening in a field above Sully and fried for a hundred and twenty people for two hours. Cones, peas, the lot. Guests still talk about it more than the cake.

Questions people ask at the window

When are you open?

Tuesday to Saturday, lunch 11:45am to 2pm and tea 4:30pm to 9pm; Sunday noon to 6pm straight through; closed Monday. The line at the top of the home page reads the clock and says whether the fryer is on now and, if not, when it next is.

How do collection slots work?

The order page lists the slots still open today, every fifteen minutes through each shift, at least twenty minutes from now. Pick one, say what you would like, and it is fried to the slot and waiting in a bag with your name on it at the end of the counter.

Do you do gluten-free?

Every Tuesday, the whole menu, from a separate fryer with its own oil and tools; on request any other day with a ten-minute wait. We are not a certified gluten-free kitchen and we explain exactly what we do.

Where are the allergens?

On the allergens page: every item on the menu against all fourteen, kept to the recipe, and on the board in the shop. Ask at the window to see the ingredient sheets.

Is the fish sustainable?

Our cod and haddock are MSC-certified, from four named boats, frozen at sea; the plaice and hake from Brixham day boats. The sustainability page has the boats.

Can you cater a party?

Yes: the van fries at your door for twenty to a hundred and fifty within twenty miles, from £13 a head; collected boxes for ten or more from £11 a head.
