Collection slots

Book the 6:15 slot on the website at lunchtime, walk past the queue at the window at 6:14, bag with my name on it, still too hot to hold. The haddock is the best on this coast and I have done the research from Tenby to Porthcawl.

Gluten-free

Coeliac for twenty years and this was the first chip shop fish I had eaten since I was a child. Separate fryer, blue-handled everything, and they talked me through it without me asking. We drive over every other Tuesday.

Catering

The van came to our wedding evening in a field above Sully and fried for a hundred and twenty people for two hours. Cones, peas, the lot. Guests still talk about it more than the cake.

The café

The plated meal at the window table on a grey Tuesday, the Severn going past, a pot of tea and bread and butter. My nan brought me here in 1994 and it has not changed in any way that matters.

Family deals

Great fish, great chips, and the family deal is good value. Four stars because the split hours catch me out: the shop shuts at two and does not reopen until half four, and I have turned up at three more than once. The website says when it is next open, to be fair, which is how I learned.

Allergens

My son is allergic to mustard and egg. The allergens page lists every item against all fourteen, and the curry sauce and the tartare are marked. At the window they showed me the ingredient sheet for the batter. That is how it should be done.

About the four stars

The split hours catch people out, and Huw is right.

We close at two and open again at half four, Tuesday to Saturday, because the range needs cleaning, the chips need blanching and the people who fry need to eat. What we have done since: the home page and the menu page now read the clock and say whether the fryer is on and, if not, exactly when it is next on; the sign on the door says the same; and the slot board only offers times when we are open. It is still shut at three. We will not pretend otherwise.
