How we keep it

A pub for the village, run like one.

A local, first

The same faces at the bar since the pit closed in 1991, and room for new ones. Nobody drinks on their own here unless they want to.

Cask kept properly

Rhys keeps the cellar at twelve degrees, rests every cask a day before it goes on, and pulls a taster for anyone who asks.

Something on every night

Quiz, darts, open mic, a band on Saturday and the carvery on Sunday. The chalkboard on this website changes with the date.

Valleys prices

A pint of real ale from £4.20, a Sunday dinner £13.95, the quiz £1 a head with the pot going to the winners.

Real ale

Best kept pint in the Taff Bargoed valley. Rhys gave me a taster of both guests before I picked, and the Navigation Dark is the mild my grandfather drank.

Sunday carvery

Booked the 1:30 sitting on the website, seats were there as it said. Proper beef, crackling that cracked, and a Yorkshire the size of your head.

Function room

We held Dad’s wake upstairs at four days’ notice. Carol sorted everything, the buffet was lovely and the choir sang in the bar after. We could not have asked for more.

Questions people ask

What is on tonight?

The chalkboard on the home page shows tonight and the rest of the week, from the date: pool on Mondays, the quiz on Tuesdays, darts on Wednesdays, the choir on Thursdays, open mic on Fridays, a band on Saturdays and the carvery on Sundays.

Do I need to book the carvery?

For the middle sittings, yes. The carvery page shows the seats left at each sitting for any Sunday in the next eight weeks.

Are children welcome?

Until 9pm with an adult, in the lounge and the garden. There is a children’s carvery plate at £7.50.

What about allergies?

Tell us before you order. Our kitchen handles all 14 major allergens, so we cannot promise any dish is free of traces. The allergen book is behind the bar.

Are dogs allowed?

In the bar, the snug and the garden. Not in the dining end on Sundays.

Do you have rooms?

No, but the Travelodge at Merthyr is fifteen minutes away and Carol can recommend B&Bs in Quakers Yard.

The fire is lit, the kettle’s on behind the bar, and there is a seat at the end.

Real ale from £4.20, a Sunday carvery at £13.95, the quiz on Tuesdays and a band on Saturdays, at the bottom of the High Street in Treharris since 1893.
