The team

Two in the office. Twenty driving.

Rhodri bought the firm in 2004 and still drives the earliest airport runs. Lowri has run the office since 2012. The twenty drivers average seven years with us, and their checks are below.

Rhodri Evans

Owner and driver. The airports, the eight-seaters, the rota

Drove for the firm he bought in 2004 for six years before that, and still does the 3:45am airport runs because he says it is the best part of the day. Writes the rota, interviews every driver himself, checks every car on the first Monday of the month, and has done Heathrow more than four hundred times. Will tell you to the minute what time to leave for a flight and has not been wrong yet.

Lowri Hughes

Office manager. School runs, accounts, the day dispatch

Joined in 2012 to answer the phone and now runs the office: the daytime dispatch, the forty accounts and their invoices, and every school run, each of which she sets up with a visit to the school and the family. Knows which driver each child has, which surgery sends patients on which days, and the name of every regular who rings rather than uses the app. Laid out the fares table on this website so it matches the dispatch screen exactly.

  • 184,000journeys last year, from a Taff Street hop to Heathrow
  • 22cars in the fleet, four of them eight-seaters, two with a ramp
  • 21years on Gelliwastad Road, the same office and the same number
  • 4.8average rating

The paperwork

What to ask any taxi firm for, and ours.

Licences

An operator licence from Rhondda Cynon Taf, a private-hire driver licence for every driver, and a plate on every car, inspected by the council twice a year. The numbers are on the car and on the driver's badge; ask to see the badge.

Checks

Enhanced DBS with the barred-list check on every driver, renewed every three years and on the update service; the council's safeguarding course for school and contract work; a medical every five years, and every year after sixty-five.

Insurance and cameras

Hire-and-reward insurance on every car and £10 million public liability. A forward-facing dashcam in every car, with the footage kept for thirty days and released only to the police or the insurer.

The drivers

Twenty, employed or on a settled contract, an average of seven years with us, trained on the ramp, the child seats and the airports. Rhodri interviews every one and does the first airport run with them.

The office

The same room on Gelliwastad Road since 2004, and the same number.

The office is a former bookmaker's opposite the library, with the dispatch desk behind the counter, two screens, a wall map that is out of date and a kettle that is not. The phone number has not changed in twenty-one years, which is why half the town still rings it rather than using the app, and the night line rings through to whoever is dispatching from home.
