The same vetted driver every morning, from £9 a leg within the borough, for schools, councils and families

School and contract runs

Daily school runs for the council, for schools with pupils who need a car, and for families with two schools and one parent, with the same enhanced-DBS-checked driver every day and a substitute the school has already met. Contract runs for surgeries, day centres and the university on the same terms, from £9 a leg within the borough.

A child with a school bag climbing into the back seat of a clean black estate car at a kerb on a residential street in the morning, a driver holding the door, faces turned away

Eleven of our cars do the same journey every morning of term: the same child, the same door, the same driver, the same time. Rhondda Cynon Taf sends us pupils who need a car to a school across the borough; schools send us children whose parents have asked; and parents with two schools at opposite ends of the valley and one car send us the other child. The driver is the same person every day, and the school knows the name.

A school run is set up with a visit, not a phone call: Lowri meets the parent and, where it is a council placement, the school, agrees the pick-up time and door, meets the child, and writes down what matters (the seat, the bag, who collects at the other end, the words that help on a bad morning). The driver is then the same every day for the year. If they are ill the substitute is one of three drivers the school has already met, and the parent is texted the name and the car before it arrives.

Every driver on school work holds an enhanced DBS with the barred-list check and the council's safeguarding training, and the cars on those runs carry a passenger assistant where the council contract requires one. From £9 a leg within the borough for a single child, invoiced monthly; where two or three families share a run it is split, from £5 a child a leg. Wheelchair users travel in one of the two accessible vehicles at the same rate.

Contract runs work the same way for grown-ups: a surgery sending patients to the Royal Glamorgan for dialysis three mornings a week, a day centre with a round of eight collections, the university moving staff between Treforest and the Cardiff campus. Each route is priced in writing and run by the same driver, with a monthly invoice and a named person at the office who knows the route.

Questions about school runs

Can my child travel alone?

From the age the school and you agree, yes, with the same driver every day and a text to you when the child is dropped. Under eight we ask for a passenger assistant or a parent, as the council does.

Do you do the run in the holidays?

Only if you want it. Term dates are set at the start of the year and the invoice stops for the breaks; a one-off in the holidays is a normal fixed fare.

Ring for a car now, or book a fixed time for the airport.

Cars on the road twenty-four hours a day from the office on Gelliwastad Road, with the fare fixed before you get in. Ring 01443 496 0700 any hour, or book here for a set time, an airport run, an eight-seater or the ramp car and the office confirms within the hour in the day.
