Fixed fare, before you ring

Pick the zone, the destination and how many of you; the fares page gives the figure.

Fixed fares, on the websiteCardiff, the three airports and the whole borough priced by zone, the same figure on this page as on the dispatcher's screen. No meter running in traffic on the A470, no surprise at the other end. The quote on the fares page is the fare.
Twenty-two cars, four of them eight-seatersSaloons and estates for most jobs, four eight-seater minibuses for the rugby, the stag and the family to Bristol, and two wheelchair-accessible vehicles with a ramp and a trained driver. All licensed by Rhondda Cynon Taf and inspected twice a year.
A car on the road at every hourSixteen cars on weekdays, nine on a Friday and Saturday night, five through the small hours every night of the year. The night line rings through to a dispatcher, not a machine, and a 4am airport run is booked the night before with a fixed time.
Drivers we know by nameEvery driver is enhanced DBS-checked, licensed by the council, trained on the ramp and the child seats, and has been with us an average of seven years. The school runs have the same driver every day, and the schools have their names.

What we do

Six things, each with a fare on it.

All six

Anywhere in Pontypridd town to anywhere else in it for a flat £6 in the day; Treforest, Rhydyfelin, Church Village, Cilfynydd, Porth and the rest of the borough priced by zone on the fares page; the station, the hospital, the shops and home from the pub, with a car in about eight minutes most of the day.

A flat £6 anywhere within Pontypridd town in the day, £4.

02

Airport transfers

05

Account customers

An account for businesses, surgeries, care homes, schools, the university and the council: book by phone, app or email against the account, a reference and a cost centre on every journey, one itemised invoice on the first of the month with 5% off the fixed fares, and a named person at the office who knows your routes.

Airports

We watch the flight, not the clock.

An airport collection is booked against the flight number. If it lands early the driver is early; if it is two hours late the office holds the driver back and you pay nothing for the wait. How we work

Four things that are true in every car.

The fare is the fare

Fixed fares by zone to Cardiff and the airports, a flat £6 anywhere in town in the day, and a 25% uplift after midnight that is written down rather than discovered. Waiting is free for the first ten minutes and £5 a quarter hour after, and the driver tells you when it starts.

We watch the flight, not the clock

Airport collections are booked against the flight number. If it lands early we are early; if it is two hours late the driver is told by the office and you are not charged for the wait. Forty-five minutes free after landing, then the normal waiting rate.

Vetted, licensed, insured, and the same faces

Rhondda Cynon Taf licence, enhanced DBS, a six-monthly vehicle inspection, hire-and-reward insurance and a dashcam in every car. Contract and school work gets the same named driver every day, and a substitute the school has already met.

Accounts invoiced once a month

Businesses, surgeries, care homes and the university book by phone, app or email against an account, get a reference on every job, and one invoice on the first of the month with 5% off the fixed fares. The office answers account queries the same day.

School and contract runs

The same driver, the same door, every morning of term.

Eleven cars do the same school run every day for the council, for schools and for families, with an enhanced-DBS-checked driver the child knows and a substitute the school has already met. Surgeries, day centres and the university run their regular journeys the same way, on account, invoiced once a month with a reference on every trip.

How a run is set up

Every hour

Five cars through the small hours, every night of the year.

The night line rings through to a dispatcher, not a machine. Sixteen cars on a weekday, nine on a Friday and Saturday night until three, and five between midnight and six every night including Christmas, when the 25% night fare applies in town and the airport fares do not change. The dispatcher tells you the car, the colour and the driver's name, and the app shows it coming up the hill.

Airports

Booked the night before for 3:45, car outside at 3:40 with the engine off so as not to wake the street. £46 as it said on the website, the driver took the cases, and on the way back a week later the flight was ninety minutes late and he was there anyway with no charge for it. That is the whole job done properly.

Local fares

Six quid home from town on a Thursday, same as it says, same as it was last year. The dispatcher tells you the colour of the car and the driver's name and the app shows it coming up Taff Street. Twenty minutes on a Saturday at midnight, which they tell you honestly rather than saying five.

School runs

My son has been taken to his school in Tonteg every morning for three years by the same driver, Emyr, who knows which days are hard and which song helps. When Emyr was off, the office texted me the name of the substitute, who my son had already met at the school. I did not know a taxi firm could do that.

Questions people ask the dispatcher

How much is a taxi to Cardiff Airport?

£48 from Pontypridd town centre for up to four passengers with luggage, £40 from Taff's Well, £54 from Abercynon: every zone is on the fares page and the quote there is the fare. Five to eight people in an eight-seater is 40% more. The flight is watched, forty-five minutes after landing are free, and there is no night uplift on a pre-booked airport run.

Are the fares really fixed?

Yes. Cardiff, the three airports and every zone in the borough have a published fare and that is what the dispatcher quotes and the driver takes, whatever the traffic does. The meter runs only on journeys we have not priced, outside the zones, and the driver tells you first.

How long will I wait for a car?

About eight minutes in town during the day with sixteen cars running; about twenty on a Friday or Saturday night between eleven and one, which we would rather tell you than pretend. Book a time and the car is yours at that time.

Do you have wheelchair-accessible taxis?

Two, with a rear ramp, four-point restraints and trained drivers, at the same fare as a saloon. Book an hour ahead in the day and the night before for a morning run; regular hospital journeys are set up once on the same driver.

Can I open an account for my business?

Yes, with no fee: 5% off the fixed fares, a reference on every job and one itemised invoice a month as a PDF and a spreadsheet. About forty surgeries, care homes, schools and firms in the borough already do.

Do you do school runs?

Eleven cars do the same school run every morning of term for the council, for schools and for families, with the same enhanced-DBS-checked driver every day and a substitute the school has already met. From £9 a leg within the borough, invoiced monthly.
