Mending is the cheapest way to keep a good garment, and the most satisfying job in the workroom. A broken zip in a ten-year-old coat should never be the end of it.

Zips are the most common repair: jeans, skirts and dresses with a concealed zip, jackets and coats with an open-ended zip, and bags. We carry metal and nylon zips in most lengths and colours, and order anything unusual in two days. A coat zip is unpicked, replaced and top-stitched to match the original, and the coat is pressed before it goes back.

Tears and holes are mended so they disappear as far as the fabric allows: darned on knitwear, patched invisibly from the inside on wool, rewoven on good suits by a specialist we use in London. Moth holes in jumpers and suits are the job we are asked to do most often in spring. Split seams, dropped hems, loose buttons, torn pockets and worn linings are quick.

Small jobs such as a button, a split seam or a dropped hem can usually be done while you wait or while you have a coffee on Glebe Street, if the workroom is not busy. Ask at the counter.

Questions about repairs and zips

Can you fix a zip while I wait?

A trouser or skirt zip sometimes, if the workroom is quiet: about forty minutes. Coat zips take a day or two.

Do you repair outdoor jackets?

Yes, zips and tears in waterproofs, with seam tape over the repair to keep it waterproof. We do not repair down jackets with feather leaks.

Can you mend a moth hole invisibly?

Usually on knitwear, by darning from matching yarn. On a suit, invisible reweaving is sent to London and costs from £60.

Bring it in, or book a fitting.

Most alterations and all dry cleaning need no appointment: come to the counter on Glebe Street and we pin it there and then, with the price and the ready-by date on your ticket. Bridal, made-to-measure and evening fittings are booked.
