Wedding dress

Ana took six inches off a lace dress from the waist so the scallops stayed at the hem, added a bustle and moved the straps. Three fittings, each calmer than the last. On the day it looked as if it had been made for me, and I danced until midnight without stepping on it once.

Made-to-measure suit

I am six foot five with long arms and have never owned a jacket whose sleeves reached my wrists. Gareth measured me for an hour, the baste fitting was fascinating, and the navy suit is the best thing I own. The second suit took one fitting.

Curtains shortened

Huw came out, measured our bay in three places and found the floor drops an inch and a half across it. The curtains came back the next week hanging perfectly level, with the old weights put back. Free visit, £45 a pair, done.

Trouser hems

Dropped four pairs of work trousers on a Monday morning, the website said ready Thursday, the ticket said Thursday, they were ready Thursday. The blind hems are invisible. I will never use the bag-it-and-hope service at the station again.

Dry cleaning

Four stars because a red wine stain on a cream silk blouse did not come out completely, though they had warned me at the counter it might not, and did not charge for the second attempt. Everything else they have cleaned for me has come back perfect and beautifully pressed.

Prom dress

My daughter's prom dress arrived from online two sizes too big round the bodice and four inches too long. Ana said it could work, pinned it in one fitting, and it fitted like it was made for her. £65, and a very happy sixteen-year-old.

About the four stars

Red wine on cream silk. We said it might stay, and it did.

Elaine is right that the stain did not come out completely. Red wine that has dried into silk often will not, which is why we tell people at the counter before we start, and why we did not charge for the second attempt. Since then we have put a card on the counter with the stains we can and cannot promise to shift, so the conversation happens before the ticket is written, not after.
