A table should fit the room before it fits the budget.

Solid oak furniture, cut and joined across the yard from the showroom since 1998. Try a table on the plan. If it is too big, we would rather tell you now.

What we make

Six things in solid oak.

All six and the prices

01

Dining tables

Solid oak tables with through-tenoned legs, seating four to ten, in stock in four sizes. Check the size in your room before you travel.

From £1,150 for a four-seater, £1,480 for six, £1,850 for eight, £2,350 for ten.

02

Sofas

Deep sofas on a visible oak frame, upholstered in Wales in linen or Welsh wool, with cushion covers that come off for washing.

Two-seater from £1,650, three-seater from £1,980.

03

Beds

Solid oak bed frames in double, king and super king, with slatted bases and bolted joints that can be tightened, and do not creak.

Double from £1,190, king from £1,340, super king from £1,520.

04

Sideboards

Long, low oak sideboards and dressers with hand-cut dovetailed drawers, turned knobs and doors that close with a magnet rather than a mechanism.

Two-door from £1,280, four-door from £1,860, Welsh dresser from £2,650.

05

Made to measure

Anything in oak built to your room: alcove cupboards, long farmhouse tables, window seats and awkward corners. Mari measures, Rhodri draws, and the price comes before the work.

A measure-up is £45, taken off the piece.

06

Delivery and set-up

Our own two-person team and van on fixed weekly runs. Free in Carmarthenshire, and everything is carried in, built, levelled and the packaging taken away.

Free in Carmarthenshire; £45 to £95 elsewhere in South and West Wales.

A hand-cut dovetail joint in a drawer of pale oak

The joints

Look at the corner of the drawer.

Pull out any drawer in any shop and look at the corner. If it is stapled, or there is a metal runner on a chipboard side, you know how long it will last. Ours are dovetailed by hand, and run on waxed oak.

Table legs go right through the frame on a pegged tenon, and you can see the end grain on the rail. That is why a joint guarantee of 25 years costs us very little.

  • Oak air-dried in our barn for at least two years
  • No veneers or MDF, not even on cabinet backs
  • A hard wax oil finish you can repair yourself

How we work

Four things we would rather say first.

We would rather you measured

A table too big for the room is the commonest mistake in this trade, and the most expensive one. If the planner says it will not fit, believe it.

Oak with a Welsh address

Boards come from Welsh and Marches woodland, felled under a licence, then air-dried in our barn for two years. You will see knots, and we leave them in.

Joints you can see

Through-tenons on tables and dovetails on drawers, cut here. Nothing is held together by a bracket or a dowel you cannot see.

It arrives with two people

Our own van and our own people. It goes in through the door, up the stairs if it can, and gets built where it will stand.

  • 1998the year Rhodri first took the lease on the Old Mill
  • 2 yearsminimum in our barn before an oak board is cut
  • 4 sizesof table in stock, and any size made to order
  • 25 yearsguarantee on every joint we cut ourselves

What people say once it is in.

All six, including the four-star one
Dining table

I was set on the eight-seater. The planner on the website said I would have 22 centimetres to walk behind the chairs, so we measured it out with masking tape on the floor and agreed. The six-seater has been perfect, and I have saved £370.

NerysAmmanford
Made to measure

Our cottage has no straight walls. Mari measured the alcoves and sent a drawing and a fixed price in nine days. The cupboards fit to within a pencil line, and it came in at exactly the price on the drawing.

Delivery

Two lads carried a ten-seat table up a farm track in the rain. They took the legs off to get it in, built it, levelled it on our slate floor, and took every bit of cardboard away.

Questions before you buy

What size table will fit my room?

Measure the room and use the room planner. It draws the table to scale in your room and tells you how many centimetres are left to walk behind the chairs.

Is it really all solid oak?

Yes: tops, legs, drawer sides and cabinet backs. No veneers, no MDF. Sofas have oak frames, and upholstery on top of that.

How long will it take?

Stock tables and sideboards go on the next delivery run a week after you order. Sofas take about ten weeks, and commissions eight to fourteen.

How much is delivery?

Free in Carmarthenshire, £45 to Swansea and Neath, £60 to Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion, £95 to Cardiff and the Valleys. That includes two people, carrying in, building and levelling.

Will the oak change colour?

Yes. It starts pale and honey-coloured, and darkens slowly in the light for decades. Move the fruit bowl now and then.

What if something goes wrong in ten years?

The joints we cut are guaranteed for 25 years. If a joint moves, we come and fix it, free. Knocks and spills are repairable, and we sell you the oil.

Measure the room. We will tell you the truth about the table.

The room planner draws it to scale in a few seconds, or Mari will come out with a tape for £45, taken off the price of the piece.
