One-to-one

I had not exercised in twelve years and I cried a bit at the free session because I was so nervous. Gethin walked me round the lake and we did ten squats to a bench. Twelve weeks later I did the lighthouse steps twice and the stairs at work are nothing. The plan on paper is on my fridge.

Running

Could not run for a minute in January. Hanna ran at the back with me for the first month. Cardiff 10k in June in 61 minutes. The Sunday coffee is now the best bit of my week.

Bootcamp

Sixty-four, a sore knee, and I thought a bootcamp meant being shouted at. It means twelve of us on the grass at 7:30 with three versions of everything and a man who says "nice" a lot. I can get up off the floor without my hands now, which is the thing I actually wanted.

Pairs

We did pairs for the wedding and then just kept coming to bootcamp, three mornings a week for two years. £59 a month between the two of us is less than the gym memberships we never used. The rain sessions under the trees are weirdly the best ones.

Bootcamp

Blood pressure from 158/98 to 132/84 in six months and the doctor has deferred the tablets, so the training works. Four stars because the 6:30 Thursday is always full and I have been bounced twice when I forgot to book by nine; they are honest that the cap is the point, but a second Thursday session would fix it.

I moved to Bristol and did not want to start again with a stranger. The Sunday plan comes for the kettlebell and the park I have, Hanna marks up my videos the same day, and the monthly call is the only reason I have kept going through a new job. £79 and no app.

About the four stars

The Thursday 6:30 was always full. There are now two of them.

Owen was right: the Thursday 6:30 strength session was full by Tuesday most weeks and the cap of twelve is the whole point, so people who forgot to book got bounced. From this month Hanna runs a second 6:30 on Thursday on the next lawn along, so there are twenty-four places, and the booking page now sends a reminder at 8pm the night before to anyone who came the previous week. Owen\'s blood pressure is still down, which is the bit that matters.
