Lowri & Jamie

Two tilers, and a shed of old tiles.

Lowri surveys and quotes every job, sets out every room and restores the Victorian floors; Jamie lays the large formats, the heated floors and the herringbone. Nobody you have not met turns up with a trowel, and nobody subcontracts the set-out.

The people

Lowri Daniel, a tiler in her late thirties with short dark hair, in navy work trousers and a terracotta t-shirt, kneeling on a geometric tiled hallway floor with a rubber float

Lowri Daniel

Owner and tiler. Surveys, set-outs, Victorian floors, and the patterns

Trained as a tiler at Barry college after ten years in a tile showroom, where she learned what every tile is made of and how each one fails. Started Grout & About in 2010 with a wet saw and a van, and fell for Victorian hallway floors on her third job, when she found one under the carpet of a house on Romilly Road. Has restored more than two hundred since, and keeps a shed of reclaimed tiles to match them.

Jamie Morris

Tiler. Large formats, floors, underfloor heating and herringbone

Came to Lowri as an apprentice in 2016 and stayed. Lays the large-format floors and walls, the underfloor heating jobs and anything in herringbone, with a laser and a set of levelling clips he will not lend anyone. Has an NVQ Level 3 in wall and floor tiling and plays in goal for a Sunday league team in Barry.

How we tile

Four habits behind every floor.

Measure to the box

Every wall and floor measured, the wastage for the pattern added, and the count rounded up to whole boxes from one batch.

Fix the floor first

Levelled, decoupled over timber, tanked in wet areas. Most cracked tiles are a bad floor, not a bad tile.

Check every box

Batch number and shade checked on delivery, before a tile goes on the wall. We learned that one the hard way; the reviews page says how.

Cut outside

The wet saw on a bench outside, an extractor on the dry cutter, and the floor boarded until the grout has cured.

Shelves of reclaimed Victorian geometric floor tiles sorted by colour and shape in a wooden shed, terracotta, black, blue and buff

The shed

Six thousand reclaimed Victorian tiles, sorted by colour and shape.

Every floor we cannot save gives up its sound tiles to the ones we can. They are cleaned, sorted by colour, size and shape (squares, triangles, the little lozenges in a border) and kept on shelves behind the sample room. When a hallway in Romilly Road is missing eleven red triangles, they are usually in there, with a hundred and twenty years of the same wear.

Victorian hallways

Measure the wall, count the boxes, then a survey.

The calculator turns your width and height into tiles, whole boxes, adhesive and grout bags, the labour and the days for your tile and pattern. The quote form takes two minutes; Lowri measures every wall and floor at a free survey and the written quote follows within three working days.
