Regrouting £28 a square metre; repairs by the day, £260

Regrouting and repairs

Black and crumbling grout raked out and regrouted, cracked tiles cut out and replaced, loose tiles refixed, and silicone renewed. The jobs that make a tired bathroom look new for a fraction of the cost of retiling.

A close-up of a tiler raking out old discoloured grout between white wall tiles with a grout saw, half the wall already freshly regrouted in bright white

Most tiled walls that look old have perfectly good tiles and dead grout. Raking it out and regrouting takes a day for a bathroom, costs a fraction of retiling, and the room looks new. Cracked tiles can be cut out and replaced one at a time, if you have spares or we can match them.

Grout is raked out to at least two thirds of its depth with a grout saw and an oscillating tool (never deeper, or the tile edges chip), the joints are vacuumed, and new grout is pushed in, struck and cleaned off. In showers we use a grout with a mould inhibitor or an epoxy grout. Silicone is cut out completely, the joint cleaned with a solvent and dried, and new sanitary silicone run in one bead.

Cracked tiles are cut out from the middle so the ones around them are not disturbed, the old adhesive is chiselled back, and the new tile is fixed and grouted to match. Hollow-sounding tiles on a floor usually mean the adhesive bed has failed; we lift and relay them. If the wall behind is wet, we tell you: regrouting will not fix a leaking valve.

Questions about regrouting and repairs

Can you match my grout colour?

Usually; we carry a range of colours. Better still, regrout the whole wall so it all matches.

I have no spare tiles. Can you replace a cracked one?

Sometimes we can find the tile or a close match; sometimes a contrasting tile used as a deliberate feature is the honest answer. We will tell you which.

Will regrouting stop my shower leaking?

Only if the grout is the cause. Leaks are often the valve, the waste or a failed tray seal. We check, and we will tell you if it needs a plumber.

Measure the wall, count the boxes, then a survey.

The calculator turns your width and height into tiles, whole boxes, adhesive and grout bags, the labour and the days for your tile and pattern. The quote form takes two minutes; Lowri measures every wall and floor at a free survey and the written quote follows within three working days.
