Victorian hallway

Our hallway was under three layers of carpet and a layer of lino glued down. Lowri said it could be saved and it was: four days, eleven tiles matched from her reclaimed stock, and you cannot tell which. People stop at the door to look at it.

Floors and patio

Kitchen floor in 600 by 600 porcelain over electric underfloor heating, and the same tile in 20 mm on the patio outside the bifolds. The calculator said 12 boxes for the floor and we had two tiles left over. Not one lip between tiles anywhere.

Splashback

Herringbone metro behind the range, which the kitchen fitter said would take two days. It took Jamie two, and the cuts at both ends are identical. He told us beforehand it would waste nearly a fifth of the tiles, so we ordered enough.

Regrouting

The shower grout was black and I was quoted £3,000 to retile. Lowri regrouted the whole bathroom in a day for £310, renewed the silicone, and told me the valve was fine. It looks new.

Beautiful bathroom tiling and very tidy. Four stars because the large-format tiles we had chosen turned out to be from two batches with a slight shade difference, which they spotted and stopped to tell us about, but it meant a week's wait for a matching batch. I would rather they had checked the boxes on delivery.

New Victorian floor

A new Victorian-pattern floor in our 1905 hall where the original had been taken out in the 1970s. Lowri drew three patterns on the survey, we picked the one with the blue border, and it looks as though it has always been there.

About the four stars

Karen's tiles came in two batches. Now every box is checked when it arrives.

Tiles are made in batches, and two batches of the same tile can differ in shade. Karen's large-format tiles arrived from two, which we noticed on the wall and stopped to show her, and the matching batch took a week. Stopping was right; finding out on the wall was not. Now every box is opened and checked for batch number and shade on the day it is delivered, before the job starts, and the calculator tells you to order every box at once from one batch.
