Wall & floor tilers · Barry since 2010

Set out from the middle. Counted to the box.

Kitchens, bathrooms, heated floors, patios, and the Victorian hallways under Barry's carpets. Put in your wall or floor and the calculator counts the tiles, boxes and bags and prices the labour.

The floor is right before a tile goes downLevelled, primed, decoupled over timber and tanked in wet areas. Most cracked tiles are a bad floor, not a bad tile, and we fix the floor first.
Set out from the middleEvery wall and floor is set out before the first tile so the cuts are even at both ends and nobody sees a sliver by the door. It takes an hour and it is the whole job.

Tiling

Six kinds of tiling, each priced.

All six

01

Kitchens and splashbacks

Metro, zellige, glass or large-format porcelain behind the hob and the sink: set out so the cuts land evenly under the cupboards, trimmed at every edge, and grouted in a colour that will still look clean in a year.

A splashback, usually a day, from £280 including VAT, adhesive and grout; kitchen walls from £42 a square metre.

02

Bathrooms and wet walls

Bathroom walls and floors tiled over a tanked, level background: the shower area waterproofed before a tile goes on, niches built in, edges trimmed, and silicone at every change of plane.

Walls from £42 a square metre including VAT, adhesive, grout and tanking in the shower area; floors from £40.

03

Floors, with underfloor heating

Kitchen, hall and bathroom floors on a levelled, decoupled base, with electric underfloor heating laid in the same job if you want it. Large-format porcelain, wood-effect planks, and the patterns on the patterns page.

Floors from £40 a square metre including VAT, levelling compound and adhesive; electric underfloor heating mats laid from £45 a square metre plus the electrician's connection.

04

Victorian and encaustic hallway restoration

The geometric and encaustic hallway floors in Barry's Victorian terraces, cleaned, the loose tiles lifted and relaid, the missing ones matched from reclaimed stock or new reproductions, and sealed. Or a new Victorian-pattern floor laid from scratch.

Restoration by the day, £260 a day including VAT and materials; a typical hallway three to five days.

05

Outdoor porcelain patios

20 mm outdoor porcelain laid on a full mortar bed with a slurry primer, the joints filled with a resin or cement grout, and the falls set so rain runs away from the house. The same tile inside and out, if you want it.

Outdoor porcelain laid from £68 a square metre including VAT, bedding mortar, primer and grout, on a prepared base; groundwork and sub-base quoted after the survey.

06

Regrouting and repairs

Black and crumbling grout raked out and regrouted, cracked tiles cut out and replaced, loose tiles refixed, and silicone renewed. The jobs that make a tired bathroom look new for a fraction of the cost of retiling.

Regrouting walls £28 a square metre including VAT; repairs, cracked tiles replaced and silicone renewed by the day, £260; £280 minimum.

How we tile

Four things true of every job.

Measured to the box

We measure every wall and floor and tell you exactly how many boxes to order, with the wastage for your pattern, so you are not left one box short from a batch that has sold out.

The right adhesive for the substrate

Flexible adhesive on timber and heated floors, a decoupling membrane where boards move, rapid-set where a room must be back in use, and tanking under every shower.

Lines that run true

Laser set-out, levelling clips on large tiles so the edges sit flat, and grout joints as tight as the tile is made for. You should be able to run a hand across a floor and feel nothing.

Cutting outside, dust kept down

Wet cutting on a bench outside, an extractor on the dry cutter, sheets on the route, and the floor protected with board until the grout has cured.

Victorian hallways

Under the carpet in half of Barry is a floor like this.

Geometric and encaustic tiles laid a hundred and twenty years ago, hard as stone, usually under three layers of carpet and a layer of glued lino. We have saved more than two hundred: cleaned, the loose tiles relaid on a lime bed, the missing ones matched from six thousand reclaimed tiles in the shed, and sealed so it breathes.

Victorian hallway

Our hallway was under three layers of carpet and a layer of lino glued down. Lowri said it could be saved and it was: four days, eleven tiles matched from her reclaimed stock, and you cannot tell which. People stop at the door to look at it.

FfionRomilly Road, Barry
Floors and patio

Kitchen floor in 600 by 600 porcelain over electric underfloor heating, and the same tile in 20 mm on the patio outside the bifolds. The calculator said 12 boxes for the floor and we had two tiles left over. Not one lip between tiles anywhere.

Joe and SamRhoose
Splashback

Herringbone metro behind the range, which the kitchen fitter said would take two days. It took Jamie two, and the cuts at both ends are identical. He told us beforehand it would waste nearly a fifth of the tiles, so we ordered enough.

Questions people ask before they ring

How much does tiling cost?

Labour from £38 a square metre for large wall tiles to £55 for small squares, including VAT, adhesive and grout, more for herringbone and other patterns. A splashback is from £280. The calculator prices the labour and counts the tiles, boxes and bags for your wall or floor.

How many tiles do I need?

The area plus the wastage for your pattern: about 10% for a straight lay, 12% for brick bond, 15% for diagonal or hexagon and 18% for herringbone. The calculator does the sums and rounds up to whole boxes; order them all from one batch.

Can you save my Victorian hallway?

Probably: most can be cleaned, relaid where loose and matched where missing. Send a photograph with the carpet pulled back at a corner and Lowri will tell you honestly.

Do you supply tiles?

Either way: choose your own, or we order at trade price and pass it on at cost. We check every box on delivery for batch and shade before a tile goes on the wall.

Do you do underfloor heating?

Electric mats, yes: laid, tested before and after, and encapsulated before the tiles go down. A registered electrician connects and certifies the circuit.

How long will it take?

A splashback a day, a bathroom three to five days, a kitchen floor two or three with underfloor heating, a Victorian hallway restoration three to five. The calculator gives the days for your area.

Measure the wall, count the boxes, then a survey.

The calculator turns your width and height into tiles, whole boxes, adhesive and grout bags, the labour and the days for your tile and pattern. The quote form takes two minutes; Lowri measures every wall and floor at a free survey and the written quote follows within three working days.
