Tiling

Six kinds of tiling, each priced.

From a splashback in a day to a Victorian hallway saved from under forty years of carpet. Each page says how we prepare the wall or floor, how long it takes and what it costs; the calculator counts the boxes and the patterns page shows what herringbone really costs.

01

Kitchens and splashbacks

Metro, zellige, glass or large-format porcelain behind the hob and the sink: set out so the cuts land evenly under the cupboards, trimmed at every edge, and grouted in a colour that will still look clean in a year.

A splashback, usually a day, from £280 including VAT, adhesive and grout; kitchen walls from £42 a square metre.

02

Bathrooms and wet walls

Bathroom walls and floors tiled over a tanked, level background: the shower area waterproofed before a tile goes on, niches built in, edges trimmed, and silicone at every change of plane.

Walls from £42 a square metre including VAT, adhesive, grout and tanking in the shower area; floors from £40.

03

Floors, with underfloor heating

Kitchen, hall and bathroom floors on a levelled, decoupled base, with electric underfloor heating laid in the same job if you want it. Large-format porcelain, wood-effect planks, and the patterns on the patterns page.

Floors from £40 a square metre including VAT, levelling compound and adhesive; electric underfloor heating mats laid from £45 a square metre plus the electrician's connection.

04

Victorian and encaustic hallway restoration

The geometric and encaustic hallway floors in Barry's Victorian terraces, cleaned, the loose tiles lifted and relaid, the missing ones matched from reclaimed stock or new reproductions, and sealed. Or a new Victorian-pattern floor laid from scratch.

Restoration by the day, £260 a day including VAT and materials; a typical hallway three to five days.

05

Outdoor porcelain patios

20 mm outdoor porcelain laid on a full mortar bed with a slurry primer, the joints filled with a resin or cement grout, and the falls set so rain runs away from the house. The same tile inside and out, if you want it.

Outdoor porcelain laid from £68 a square metre including VAT, bedding mortar, primer and grout, on a prepared base; groundwork and sub-base quoted after the survey.

06

Regrouting and repairs

Black and crumbling grout raked out and regrouted, cracked tiles cut out and replaced, loose tiles refixed, and silicone renewed. The jobs that make a tired bathroom look new for a fraction of the cost of retiling.

Regrouting walls £28 a square metre including VAT; repairs, cracked tiles replaced and silicone renewed by the day, £260; £280 minimum.

The hour before the first tile

Set out from the middle, so nobody sees a sliver by the door.

Before a single tile goes on, we find the centre of the wall or floor, dry-lay a row each way, and move the grid until the cuts at both ends are equal and more than half a tile. On a floor we start from the doorway you see first. It takes an hour, and it is the difference between a room that looks tiled and a room that looks designed.

Measure the wall, count the boxes, then a survey.

The calculator turns your width and height into tiles, whole boxes, adhesive and grout bags, the labour and the days for your tile and pattern. The quote form takes two minutes; Lowri measures every wall and floor at a free survey and the written quote follows within three working days.
