Walls from £42 a square metre, tanking included in the shower area

Bathrooms and wet walls

Bathroom walls and floors tiled over a tanked, level background: the shower area waterproofed before a tile goes on, niches built in, edges trimmed, and silicone at every change of plane.

We tile bathrooms for homeowners and for the bathroom fitters in Barry and the Vale who leave the tiling to a specialist. Either way the order is the same: a flat, sound background, tanking wherever water goes, and a set-out that puts the cuts where you will not see them.

Shower walls are tanked with a liquid or sheet membrane, taped at every joint and corner, before a tile goes on. Old plaster that is not flat is boarded with cement board; stud walls in a shower are always cement board. Niches are built in the stud wall and tiled with mitred edges. Large-format tiles go up with levelling clips, and we never use fewer than full-coverage adhesive beds in a wet area.

Floors are levelled and, over timber, laid on a decoupling membrane so the movement in the floorboards does not crack the tiles. Silicone goes in every corner and every change of plane (where wall meets floor, bath or tray), because grout there always cracks. The calculator does the box count; the survey does the rest.

Walls from £42 a square metre including VAT, adhesive, grout and tanking in the shower area; floors from £40. Including VAT, adhesive, grout and trims; tiles are yours or ordered at trade price and passed on at cost. The calculator counts the tiles, boxes and bags and prices the labour.

Questions about bathrooms

Do you fit the bathroom too?

No: we tile. We work alongside several bathroom fitters and plumbers in Barry and the Vale and can recommend one, or we fit in with yours.

Why tank under tiles?

Because tiles and grout are not waterproof. Water gets through the grout over time, and without tanking it soaks the wall behind. Tanking is cheap; a rotten stud wall is not.

Can you tile a wet-room floor?

Yes, on a former laid by the fitter, with the falls to the drain, tanked and tiled with a slip-resistant tile.

Measure the wall, count the boxes, then a survey.

The calculator turns your width and height into tiles, whole boxes, adhesive and grout bags, the labour and the days for your tile and pattern. The quote form takes two minutes; Lowri measures every wall and floor at a free survey and the written quote follows within three working days.
