Instructors

One instructor for each side of Cardiff. Which is yours?

Find the area you live, study or work in and that is your instructor, your car and your test centre, from the first lesson to the test. Each card has the transmission, the areas covered and the pass rate for the last four quarters, and a button that books with them.

The four instructors

Sarah Lloyd, a woman in her mid-forties with shoulder-length auburn hair in a navy polo shirt, standing beside a small white car on a sunny suburban streetNorth Cardiff

Sarah Lloyd

Vauxhall Corsa, Manual. Instructor since 2013

74% first-time pass rate, last four quarters

Founded Green Light in 2013 after eight years with a national school, and still teaches a full week. Grade A at her last DVSA check, a trainer of instructors, and the one who wrote the lesson plan every instructor here uses. Tests at Llanishen, where she knows every roundabout.

Dave Morgan, a man in his mid-fifties with grey hair and a neat beard in a navy polo shirt, leaning on the roof of a small white car on a quiet streetEast Cardiff

Dave Morgan

Ford Fiesta, Manual. Instructor since 2016

69% first-time pass rate, last four quarters

Twenty years as a bus driver before qualifying as an instructor in 2016, which is where the patience comes from. Dave takes the nervous learners and the ones who have failed elsewhere, and his pass rate is lower than the others because of it; he would rather that than turn them away. Grade A. Tests at Llanishen.

Covers: Roath, Cathays, Penylan, Cyncoed, Pentwyn, Llanrumney, Rumney, St Mellons

Qualified in 2020 and took to automatic teaching from the start; the hybrid Yaris is hers and she will talk you through regenerative braking whether you ask or not. The highest first-time pass rate in the school for the last two quarters, and most of the university students. Grade A. Tests at Llantrisant Road.

Standards

What stands behind the four of them.

DVSA register, green badge

All four are fully qualified Approved Driving Instructors, not trainees. The registration numbers are in the cars and would be on the live site; the DVSA register is public and you can check them.

Standards check, grade A or B

The DVSA sits in on a lesson every four years and grades it. Sarah, Dave and Amara are grade A, Raj grade B. We publish that because most schools do not and because it is the one measure of teaching that is not ours.

DBS checked, insured

Enhanced DBS checks every three years, which the DVSA requires, and the cars insured for a learner to drive with dual controls. Every car has a dashcam, which protects you as much as us.

One plan, four instructors

Sarah wrote the lesson plan every instructor uses, against the DVSA syllabus, so if you ever change area or instructor the next one picks up exactly where the last left off.

Changing instructor

If it is not working, say so. Nobody is offended.

Learning to drive is a lot of hours in a small car with one person, and sometimes the match is wrong: the pace, the manner, the car. Tell the office and we move you to another instructor with your block intact and your plan handed over, usually within a week. It happens a handful of times a year and it is always the right call. The same goes the other way: if you move across the city, you move to the instructor there.

Book a first lesson

Book the introductory two hours. £60, from your door.

The controls on a quiet road, moving off and stopping, and enough driving to see how you take to it, with the instructor who covers your area. At the end you get a written plan and an honest estimate of the hours. Book with the form or ring the office, Monday to Saturday 8 to 7.
