Blocked drains

Kitchen sinks, toilets, baths, gullies and outside inspection chambers cleared with rods, a plunger pump or a jetter, then proven running before we leave.

Most blockages are fat, wipes and food in a kitchen run, or wipes and paper in a toilet run. They clear in under an hour. The skill is finding where, and making sure it stays clear.

We start by lifting the inspection chambers to see which are full and which are empty: the blockage is between the last full one and the first empty one. Then we clear it with rods, a hand jetter or the van jetter, depending on what it is and where. Indoors we use a plunger pump or a small electric machine on sinks and toilets, with overshoes on and sheets down.

Once it is clear we run water through and watch it reach the next chamber. If the drain has blocked before, or the water backs up slowly, we suggest a camera survey to find out why: roots, a cracked or dropped pipe, or a fat build-up that will come back. We never sell a survey to someone whose drain has blocked once with wipes.

Questions about blocked drains

Is it my drain or the water company's?

A drain serving only your property is yours. Once it joins a neighbour's, it is usually a shared sewer belonging to Welsh Water since 2011. If the blockage is in theirs, we tell you and you ring them free.

Will my insurance pay?

Some home policies cover the cost of clearing or repairing a drain. We give you a written report and photos for the claim.

How do I stop it happening again?

No wipes down the toilet (even "flushable" ones), no fat down the sink, and a strainer in the plughole. Most repeat calls are those three.
