One-to-one pad work

Forty-five minutes with a coach holding the pads: six rounds of combinations, footwork and defence drills called round by round, a conditioning finisher, and a note of what to work on. The fastest way to learn to punch properly and the hardest you will work all week.

Pad work is the heart of boxing training and the reason people stay: a coach in front of you calling the shots, moving the pads so you have to move too, and correcting the punch you have just thrown before the next one. It is fitness that needs your whole attention, which is why the forty-five minutes go quickly.

The free first round is twenty minutes: how you stand, how you make a fist and wrap a hand, the jab and the cross on the pads, and a conversation about what you want. If you carry on, every session follows the same shape: a skipping and footwork warm-up, six three-minute rounds on the pads with a minute between, a finisher on the bag or the floor, and a stretch. Rounds build from single punches to combinations, slips and rolls as you are ready, never before.

We keep a card for each client with the combinations you have learnt, the rounds you did and the thing to work on, so whichever of us holds the pads knows where you are. Most people come once or twice a week and use a class or the timer page for the days in between. Pairs share the coach for £55 and take rounds in turn, which is the cheapest way to have the pads held for you and a decent rest between rounds.

Questions about pad work

I have never punched anything. Is that a problem?

No. Most people who book have not. The first round is about how to stand and how to make a fist, and we hold the pads where you can hit them.

Will it hurt my wrists or shoulders?

Wrapped hands, the right glove and a punch thrown properly are kind to wrists. Tell us about any shoulder or wrist trouble first; we scale the rounds round it, and if you need a physio first we will say so.

The first round is free. Twenty minutes on the pads.

Tell us what you are after and roughly when you can train, and we reply within the hour between rounds with a time: how to stand, a wrapped hand, the jab and cross, and an honest answer about where to start. No card details, and nobody hits you.
