Round 02 · Training

Six ways to train, each priced.

All six

One-to-one pad work

Forty-five minutes with a coach holding the pads: six rounds of combinations, footwork and defence drills called round by round, a conditioning finisher, and a note of what to work on. The fastest way to learn to punch properly and the hardest you will work all week.

£40 a session, £360 for ten, £55 for two people sharing the coach.

Boxing fitness classes

Fifty minutes of boxing fitness for up to fourteen people, one heavy bag each: skipping, shadow boxing, bag rounds, partner pad drills and a conditioning finisher, with a coach walking the line. Mornings, evenings and Saturdays; every round has an easier and a harder version.

£8 a class, or £45 a month for as many as you like.

Beginners' fundamentals

A four-week course for people who have never boxed: stance, guard, footwork, the six punches, slipping and blocking, and how to work a round, taught in eight evening sessions to a group of eight. At the end you can walk into any class and know what the coach is asking for.

£60 for the four weeks: eight sessions, Monday and Wednesday at 6pm, wraps to keep.

White-collar fight prep

You have signed up for a charity white-collar bout and have twelve weeks. We get you fit enough to box three rounds, sharp enough on the pads to look like you belong there, and ready for fight night. Sparring happens at the licensed club running your event, never here.

£420 for twelve weeks: two pad sessions a week, a written conditioning plan, and a fight-week plan.

Kids' boxing fitness, 8 to 15

Boxing fitness for children aged eight to fifteen in two age groups: footwork games, skipping, pad and bag work, balance and coordination, and the confidence of learning something hard. No contact, ever. A parent or carer books, and Kerry, our safeguarding lead, runs every session.

£5 a session or £45 a twelve-week term.

Corporate boxing workouts

A boxing workout for a team: an hour of pads, bags and partner drills for up to sixteen people of any fitness, here at the unit or at your workplace with the kit brought in a van. Laughing is normal. Nobody is hit and nobody is made to perform.

£180 for an hour here for up to sixteen people, £240 at your workplace with the kit brought.

Round 03 · Pad slots

The next free pads, from the diary.

Forty-five minutes with Dai or Kerry holding the pads, £40, or the free twenty-minute first round. These are the next free times, worked out just now; choose one and the booking form fills it in.

Round 04 · House rules

Four rules that never change.

Nobody gets hit

Boxing training without the boxing match. The coach holds the pads, you hit them, and the only thing that hits back is the bell. White-collar boxers do their sparring at a licensed club, not here.

Scaled to the person in front of us

A sixty-year-old with a new hip and a twenty-year-old rugby winger can share a class. Every round has an easier and a harder version, and you choose which.

Rounds, not hours

Three minutes on, one minute off, six rounds. Short enough to give it everything, long enough to learn. The timer on this site runs the same rounds at home.

No contract, no joining fee

The monthly pass stops with a text. Ten-session blocks are refunded pro rata if life gets in the way. The free first round has no card details and no sales pitch.

Never boxed?

Four weeks of fundamentals. Eight beginners.

Stance, guard, footwork, the six punches and how to get out of the way, taught to eight people starting together on Monday and Wednesday evenings. £60 with wraps to keep and a week of free classes at the end. The next course starts on Monday 2 November.

Round 05 · The corner

Dai and Kerry hold the pads.

Dai Hopkins

Dai boxed as an amateur for a Newport club through his twenties, forty-one bouts and a nose that shows it, then spent fifteen years on building sites before he admitted the gym was where he was happiest. He qualified as a personal trainer in 2014 and opened Corner Man the year after with six bags and a borrowed roller door. He holds the pads for most of the one-to-one sessions, writes the fight-prep plans, and has a rule that nobody leaves without being told one thing they did well.

Kerry Bevan

Kerry came to boxing at twenty-four through a beginners' course much like ours, after years of hating every gym she joined. She runs the classes, the fundamentals course and the kids' sessions, and is the safeguarding lead. Her classes are the loud ones, and her Saturday kids' group has a waiting list. She is the one to talk to if you are nervous about walking in, because she was.

Round 06 · The judges

What people say.

Pad work

Fifty-three, never boxed, booked the free round because my son dared me. Eighteen months later I do pads with Dai every Tuesday at 6:30 and it is the best forty-five minutes of my week. My doctor is pleased about the blood pressure; I am pleased about the left hook.

Classes

I have quit every gym I ever joined within a month. Kerry's Wednesday 6:15 has had me for two years. Nobody stares, everyone is useless at something, and you leave feeling like you could take on the day.

SianRogerstone
Fight prep

Did twelve weeks before a charity white-collar night. Dai got me fit enough to box three rounds without dying and taught me to keep my hands up. Sparring was at the club running the event, which was the right call. Lost on a split decision and raised £1,400.

Questions before the first bell

Will I get hit?

No. Corner Man is a non-contact gym: pads, bags, skipping and conditioning. Nobody spars here, nobody throws a punch at a person, and partner work is always on pads.

I am unfit and have never boxed. Where do I start?

With the free twenty-minute pad round, or a free class. Most people then do the four-week fundamentals course or a few pad sessions before joining classes.

Do I need my own gloves?

Not to begin with. We lend clean gloves in every size and wraps for your first month. When you buy your own, we will tell you which and how heavy.

Can I train for a white-collar bout here?

Yes, with twelve weeks of fight prep. The sparring happens at the licensed club or promoter running your event, never here.

Is it suitable for women, older people, people with injuries?

Yes, yes and usually. Half our members are women, the oldest is seventy-four, and every round has an easier version. Tell us about injuries first; if you need a physio before boxing, we say so.

How do I book a pad session?

Choose a free slot on the classes page and the booking form fills in the time, or ring 01633 496 0105.

The first round is free. Twenty minutes on the pads.

Tell us what you are after and roughly when you can train, and we reply within the hour between rounds with a time: how to stand, a wrapped hand, the jab and cross, and an honest answer about where to start. No card details, and nobody hits you.
