Microsuction clinic

Ear-wax removal

Microsuction under magnification, with a video look before and after. Tuesday and Thursday all day, Saturday mornings. Many GP surgeries no longer offer it.

Blocked ears are the commonest thing we see, and the most satisfying. Half an hour, a small amount of noise, and often you walk out onto Broad Street surprised by the traffic.

We use microsuction: a very fine tube and a magnifying loupe, with no water in the ear. It is noisy for a few seconds at a time but rarely uncomfortable. If you have had a perforated eardrum or an operation on the ear, it is usually the safer way to do it, and we ask about both before we start.

A drop of olive oil in each ear for two nights beforehand softens things, which is why the next slot we offer is always at least two days away. We show you the before and after on the screen. People enjoy this more than you would expect.

If your ear is painful, weeping or you have an infection, we will not suction it: you need your GP first. If your hearing does not come back once the wax is out, we offer a free test on the spot.

Questions about wax removal

Does it hurt?

It should not. It is loud for a few seconds and some people feel slightly dizzy for a minute. Tell us and we stop.

Can you do this at home?

Yes. A home visit for wax is £85 for both ears within eight miles of Blaenavon.

Should I use cotton buds?

No. They push the wax in further, and we can tell. Nobody will shout at you.

Book a free hearing test.

An hour, no charge, no obligation. You see the results and you take them home. If it is wax, the next clinic is usually within the week.
