Free, an hour

Hearing tests

A full hour with an audiologist: a look in the ear, a proper test in a quiet booth, and your results explained on the screen in plain words.

Most people put this off for about ten years. It takes an hour, it costs nothing and you will know where you stand by the time you leave.

We start by talking: what you are missing, where, and who has been complaining. Then we look in both ears with a video otoscope, so you can see what we see. If there is wax in the way we say so, because testing through wax gives a wrong answer and you would be better coming back after it is out.

The test itself happens in the booth at the back of the shop, which is quieter than any front room on Broad Street. You press a button when you hear a tone. We test a speech-in-noise score as well, because the complaint is rarely about tones and usually about the Legion on a Friday night.

Then we turn the screen round. You will see your audiogram, what it means, and what we would do next, which is quite often nothing. Bring someone with you if you like: they usually have opinions.

What is included

  • A video look inside both ears, shown on screen
  • Pure-tone test in a sound-treated booth
  • A speech-in-noise score
  • Your audiogram printed to take away
  • A letter to your GP if anything needs looking at

What it costs

The hearing test is free, with no obligation to buy anything. The prices page has everything on one sheet.

Questions about hearing tests

Do I need a referral?

No. Ring and book. If we find anything that needs a doctor, we write to your GP.

Do I have to buy anything?

No. About the test there is no catch: it is how people find us, and plenty come back years later when they are ready.

Can I bring my wife?

Please do. A second voice you know well is useful for one of the checks, and she can ask the questions you will forget.

An hour, no charge, no obligation. You see the results and you take them home. If it is wax, the next clinic is usually within the week.
