What would yours cost?

The price before the consultationPick the tiers, the finish and the servings on the estimate page and it gives the price and the lead time, worked out the same way we work it out at the table. No "prices on request", no wedding mark-up.
One wedding cake a SaturdaySeren delivers and sets up every wedding cake herself, so we take one a Saturday and the diary says which Saturdays are free. Celebration cakes and cupcakes any day the shop is open.
Vegan and gluten-free, made separatelyVegan sponges and gluten-free sponges are baked on Mondays in the clean kitchen before anything else, in their own tins, and boxed before the flour comes out. Every flavour has a vegan version; nine have a gluten-free one.
A tasting box, off the orderSix flavours in a box for £18, collected from the shop or posted, and the £18 comes off the cake if you order. Consultations are free, an hour, at the shop or by video.

02

Celebration cakes

An eight-inch round for twenty is £55, a ten-inch for thirty £72, a two-tier for fifty £145, in any of the twelve flavours with buttercream, a drip, fresh fruit or a sugar-paste topper. A week's notice; collected from the shop or delivered locally for £8.

An eight-inch round for twenty £55, a ten-inch for thirty £72, a two-tier for fifty £145, a number cake from £60.

03

Cupcakes and towers

Cupcakes in the twelve flavours with a swirl of Swiss meringue buttercream: from £3.20 each in the shop, a boxed dozen for £34, and towers for weddings and parties from forty to a hundred and twenty with a cutting cake on top. Two days' notice for a dozen, two weeks for a tower; vegan and gluten-free the same price.

Cupcakes £3.

04

The Welsh range

The shop is named after it: Nain Morgan's bara brith, fruit soaked overnight in strong tea, at £9.50 a two-pound loaf; Welsh cakes made on the bakestone every morning at £8.40 a dozen; a Welsh tea box of a loaf, a dozen Welsh cakes and a jar of Rudry honey for £24; and a bara brith wedding tier with whisky buttercream. Posted anywhere in Britain on Tuesdays.

A two-pound bara brith £9.

05

Vegan and gluten-free

Vegan cakes in all twelve flavours (Swiss meringue made with aquafaba, butter replaced with a plant block, the same sponges) and gluten-free cakes in nine, baked on Mondays when the kitchen has been cleaned down and before any wheat flour is opened, in their own tins, and boxed before the week starts. The same price as every other cake, and they appear on the estimate page the same way.

The same price as every other cake: an eight-inch vegan or gluten-free celebration cake £55, a vegan wedding tier at the buttercream rate of £3.

06

Tastings and consultations

Before a wedding cake, an hour: a free consultation with Seren at the shop on Cardiff Road or on a video call, with the estimate page open, the sketches on the table and the flavours in front of you. The tasting box is six flavours of your choice for £18, collected or posted, and the £18 comes off the cake if you order. Tuesday to Friday by appointment and Saturday afternoons.

The consultation is free.

Nain Morgan's recipe

The bara brith the shop is named after, £9.50 a loaf.

Fruit soaked overnight in strong tea, a slow bake, and better on the third day, buttered. Gwenllian's mother made it every Thursday for fifty years without writing it down; in 2012 Gwenllian wrote it down and has made it every day since. Welsh cakes come off the bakestone in the window from eight, £8.40 a dozen, and the Welsh tea box goes anywhere in Britain on a Tuesday.

  • A two-pound loaf £9.50, a one-pound £5.50
  • The Welsh tea box £24, posted for £5.95

How we work

Four things that are true of the shop.

Real butter, Welsh eggs, no shortcuts

Butter from a creamery in Carmarthenshire, eggs from a farm at Rudry, flour milled in Pembrokeshire. Buttercream is Swiss meringue, not icing sugar and margarine. It is why the cakes cost what they cost and why they taste of something.

The price is the price

Every wedding cake is priced by the serving with a design fee by the tier count, on the estimate page. The quote you get is that number; a sugar-flower cascade or gold leaf is priced on the same sheet, and nothing is "wedding" priced.

A mother and daughter, and Nain's recipe

Gwenllian has baked since 1988 and opened the shop in 2012; Seren joined in 2017 after art school and does the design and the sugar flowers. The bara brith is Gwenllian's mother's and nobody else is allowed to make it.

Lead times that are honest

A celebration cake in a week, a wedding cake from three to eight weeks depending on the tiers and the finish, a dozen cupcakes in two days. The estimate page works out the earliest Saturday we could make yours.

Wedding cakes

We put four tiers, buttercream and a hundred and thirty servings into the estimate page and it said £575 and six weeks. Seren added gold leaf at the consultation and the quote was £610, exactly what the page plus the gold leaf said. She drove it to Llanerch herself and it was perfect.

Celebration cakes

An eight-inch with a blush drip and berries for my sister, ordered on a Tuesday, collected on Saturday, £55. Fourteen people asked where it was from. The lemon and elderflower is the best sponge I have had from anyone.

Vegan and gluten-free

They told me plainly that the kitchen handles wheat but the gluten-free is baked on a Monday before any flour is opened, in its own tins, and the allergen sheet came with the cake. First birthday cake I have eaten without worrying in years.

Questions people ask at the counter

How much is a wedding cake?

The estimate page works it out: the tiers, the finish and the servings give the price (servings at £3.20 naked, £3.80 buttercream or £4.60 fondant, plus a design fee from £20 to £100 by the tier count) and the lead time. A two-tier buttercream for forty is £190.

Is our Saturday free?

We make one wedding cake a Saturday. The estimate page and the home page show the next free Saturday; the estimate page also shows the earliest one that fits the lead time for the cake you have chosen.

Do you do vegan and gluten-free?

Every flavour is available vegan and nine of the twelve gluten-free, baked separately on Mondays before any wheat flour is opened, at the same price. The kitchen handles wheat and nuts the rest of the week, and we say so.

Can we taste first?

The tasting box is six flavours for £18, collected or posted, and the £18 comes off the cake. The consultation is a free hour with Seren at the shop or by video.

Do you deliver?

Wedding cakes are delivered and set up by Seren, free within fifteen miles of Caerphilly and £1 a mile beyond. Celebration cakes are collected, or delivered locally for £8. Bara brith and the Welsh tea box are posted anywhere in Britain.

How much notice do you need?

A celebration cake a week, a dozen cupcakes two days, a wedding cake three to eight weeks of making depending on the tiers and the finish, plus however far ahead the free Saturdays are.

The price before the consultation, and the Saturday before you ring.

The estimate page works out a wedding cake from the tiers, the finish and the servings, with the lead time and the next free Saturday. Then one form orders it, a celebration cake, cupcakes or the tasting box; Seren replies within the working day.
