The gallery

Eight recent cakes, and what they cost.

Wedding tiers, a birthday, a tower, a christening, a golden wedding tea and a rose in the making, each with where it went and the price on the day, so you can see what a number on the estimate page looks like on a table.

The cakes

Prices are what the couple or customer paid, including VAT and delivery. The photographs are of the cake on the day; the flowers on the wedding tiers came from the couples' florists.

In the making

A rose takes forty minutes, a peony an hour and a half.

Seren rolls the sugar paste thin enough to read through, cuts each petal, thins the edge, wires it, and builds the flower from the centre out, then lets it dry for a week before it goes near a cake. A cascade for a four-tier fondant cake is about twenty flowers and a week of evenings, which is why sugar flowers are priced on their own and why they keep for years after the wedding.

The price before the consultation, and the Saturday before you ring.

The estimate page works out a wedding cake from the tiers, the finish and the servings, with the lead time and the next free Saturday. Then one form orders it, a celebration cake, cupcakes or the tasting box; Seren replies within the working day.
