Two of you, or four

Doubles and relay training

Training for the Doubles and Relay divisions: who does which reps, how to hand over without losing time, and a monthly pairs session for the two of you.

Two friends in their early thirties training as a pair: one doing sandbag walking lunges on turf while the other rests and encourages

In Doubles you both run every kilometre together and split the station work however you like. That last part is where most pairs win or lose the race, and almost nobody practises it.

The usual mistake is splitting everything fifty-fifty. If one of you is stronger on the sled and the other is quicker on the erg, a sixty-forty split on each station, chosen in advance, saves minutes. We test you both on every station and write the split down.

Then we practise the handovers. Wall balls in sets of ten, lunges in twenty-metre chunks, the sled in one push each: whatever the plan, you rehearse it until neither of you needs to talk during the race.

Relay teams of four each run two kilometres and do two stations. We help you pick who does which, based on the same tests, and run a relay sim for teams before each big event.

Questions about doubles and relay

Do we have to be the same fitness?

No, and you rarely are. The split is how you make use of the difference.

Can mixed pairs train together?

Yes. Mixed Doubles uses the men's Open weights on some stations; the split usually reflects that, and we plan around it.

One of us lives away. Does that work?

Yes. The one who is away gets the plan by email and comes to the monthly pairs session and a sim before the race.

Your first class is free. Come and push a sled.

Book any class the night before and tell the coach at the door it is your first. You get the lighter option at every station, a coach nearby, and nobody watching the clock but you. Or come to a race sim and see what the whole thing feels like.
