Every scheme, the paperwork done in a day, a worked example of what you actually pay

Cycle to Work

Cycle to Work lets you pay for a bike and kit through your salary before tax, which on a £1,200 bike means about £800 out of your pay for a basic-rate taxpayer and about £700 for a higher-rate one. We take every scheme (Cyclescheme, Bike2Work, Green Commute, Cycle Solutions, Halfords, the NHS and the employers who run their own), quote the day you ask, and have the bike ready the day the voucher arrives.

Cycle to Work is the best deal in cycling and the worst explained. The short version: your employer buys the bike and kit, you pay it back from your salary before tax over a year, and the saving is your tax rate. We have done the paperwork for every scheme since 2011 and will tell you to the pound what it costs.

How it works: you ask your employer which scheme they use (or we look it up), choose the bike and the kit here, and we give you a quote with the scheme's code. You apply on the scheme's website with the quote; your employer approves it; a voucher arrives, usually within a week; you bring it in and ride away. Twelve monthly deductions come off your gross pay, so you never see the tax on them. At the end there is a small ownership fee or a longer term that makes it almost nothing; we explain which applies to your scheme.

A worked example, for a £1,200 bike with a helmet and lights: a basic-rate taxpayer saves 32% and pays about £816 over the year, £68 a month. A higher-rate taxpayer saves 42% and pays about £696. Most schemes now go to £3,000 or have no limit, so e-bikes and cargo bikes qualify. Kit counts too: locks, lights, mudguards, racks, waterproofs. We quote the day you ask, hold the bike while the voucher comes, and build it so it is ready the day you walk in.

What is included

  • Every scheme, including employer-run ones
  • A quote the day you ask, with the scheme code
  • The bike held while the voucher comes
  • E-bikes and cargo bikes on most schemes
  • Kit included: locks, lights, mudguards, clothing
  • A worked example of your real monthly cost

What it costs

No cost from us. Your employer's scheme sets the limit (most are £1,000 to £3,000). You pay the bike's price through salary sacrifice over twelve months; the saving is your tax and National Insurance rate, 32% to 47%. The workshop page has the three service levels side by side and the next free slot; the hire page works out a hire price.

Questions about cycle to Work

Does my employer have to be signed up?

Yes, but signing up is free and takes them an afternoon, and we have a letter that explains it to an HR department. About thirty Cardiff employers have joined because an employee asked.

Can I get an e-bike on it?

On nearly every scheme now, yes. The old £1,000 limit went in 2019; most schemes allow £3,000 or more, and the NHS schemes are generous.
