Ring resizing from £25, chains from £18, claws re-tipped, stones re-set, done at the bench upstairs

Jewellery repairs

Rings resized, worn shanks replaced, claws re-tipped before the stone goes, chains soldered, clasps replaced, stones re-set and pearls re-threaded, by two goldsmiths at the bench behind the counter. Twenty jobs are priced on the list; everything else is quoted before we start.

Most of what comes over the counter is a repair: a ring that no longer fits, a chain that caught on a coat, a claw worn thin after thirty years, a clasp that will not close. We have fixed about three thousand of them a year since Gareth Morgan opened the shop, and the two things people want to know are what it costs and when it will be ready. So both are written down, on the wall and on this website, before you decide.

A repair starts at the counter with a loupe. We look at the piece, tell you what it needs and what else we can see (a second claw going, a thin shank, a stone that is slightly loose), and give you a price and a day. The price is from the list where the job is on the list; where it is not, it is a quote, and the quote is the bill. The ticket carries both, and your piece is photographed and insured from that moment.

The work is done upstairs by Elin or Tomos, not sent away. Resizing uses the same carat of gold as the ring, soldered with a matching solder and polished so the join cannot be found. Claws are re-tipped with new metal built up on the old, or replaced with a new head if the old one is beyond it, and we always say which. Stones are checked and tightened at the end of any ring repair, because a loose stone after a repair is our fault.

Gold that comes off a ring in a re-shank or a resize down is weighed in front of you and either returned in an envelope or set against the bill at the scrap rate on the day. We say when a repair is not worth it: a plated chain that has worn through, a ring too thin to hold a new shank, a watch that needs a movement. Nobody pays for a look.

Questions about repairs

How long does a ring resize take?

Three working days in silver, five in gold, ten in platinum, from the list. If you need it faster for a date, say so at the counter: we can usually do gold in two days for a £15 rush charge, and we will say honestly if we cannot.

My ring is a family one and I am nervous about leaving it.

So are most people. It is photographed and insured from the ticket, it never leaves the building, and you can ask to see it on the bench before the stone goes back in. Elin has resized her own grandmother's ring twice.

Come in with the piece, or book an hour at the table.

Repairs, batteries and the cabinet need no appointment: the counter is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 5:30, in the Royal Arcade. For a bespoke commission, a ring fitting or a valuation, book an hour and we reply within the working day with a time. The price list is on the wall and on here.
