Repairs

My grandmother's ring was two sizes too small and one claw was worn to nothing. Elin looked at it with a loupe at the counter, told me the price from the list on the wall, and gave me a ticket with Thursday on it. It was ready Thursday, the join is invisible, and she showed me the claw under the glass. £85 all in.

I knew nothing. An hour at the table with a sketchbook and three sapphires on a cloth in the window light, a drawing a week later, a wax I could hold, and then the ring with the stone going in while I watched. She said yes. The whole thing cost less than the one I had been looking at online and it is hers, not a catalogue's.

Sam wanted a 7mm flat band with a brushed finish and had been told it was not a thing. Here it was a thing, made upstairs in four weeks, and mine was shaped to sit flat against my engagement ring so they do not rub. They measured us twice because it was January.

My father's Omega had not been opened in thirty years. Tomos took the back off at the counter, showed me the movement, said what it needed and what it would cost, and said honestly that it was worth doing. It keeps time now and I have a sheet of what was replaced. Twelve months on the work.

Valuations

Seven pieces valued, photographed and bound, and the insurer accepted it without a question, which the last one did not. Four stars because the Wednesday appointment slots fill weeks ahead and I had to leave the pieces for five days rather than sit in; the document itself is the best I have had.

Pre-owned

Sold my late mother's broken chains and a ring nobody would wear: weighed in front of me, the rate on a card on the counter, paid that afternoon. Then found a 1930s signet in the cabinet with the ticket saying exactly what it was and what was not original about it. Resized free. That is how a shop should work.

About the four stars

Valuations were Wednesdays only. They are now Wednesdays and Fridays, and you can sit in.

Catrin was right that one valuation day a week meant a three-week wait and leaving the pieces with us. Elin now writes valuations on Fridays as well, the appointment book opens eight weeks ahead rather than four, and anyone who would rather not leave their jewellery can sit at the table while it is examined, which takes about twenty minutes an item. The document itself has not changed, because the insurers have not asked it to.
