All twenty, and the resize estimate
Repairs done here, not sent awayThe bench is up the stairs behind the counter. Nothing you leave with us goes to a factory in another city: Elin or Tomos does the work, your ticket has a date on it, and you can ask to see the piece half-finished if you want to.
The price list on the wall and on hereTwenty jobs, each with a price and the days it takes, the same on the wall behind the counter as on this website. Anything not on the list is quoted before we touch it, in writing if you ask.
Drawn with you, made upstairsA bespoke ring starts with an hour at the table and a pencil. You see the drawing, then the wax, then the metal before the stone goes in. Nine-carat from £650; the design hour is £60 and comes off the price.
Honest about what a piece isIf a repair is not worth the price of the piece we say so. If a stone is glass we say so. If a watch needs a service we cannot do, we tell you who can. Thirty-eight years in one arcade is built on that.

What we do

Six things, each with a price on it.

All six

01

Jewellery repairs

Rings resized, worn shanks replaced, claws re-tipped before the stone goes, chains soldered, clasps replaced, stones re-set and pearls re-threaded, by two goldsmiths at the bench behind the counter. Twenty jobs are priced on the list; everything else is quoted before we start.

Resizing from £25 in silver, £45 in gold and £85 in platinum for one size.

02

Bespoke commissions

A piece made for one person, from a conversation. An hour at the table with Elin and a sketchbook, a scaled drawing within a week, a wax model you can try on, then the ring in metal before the stone is set. Nine-carat from £650, eighteen-carat from £950, platinum from £1,400, with your own stones or ours.

From £650 in nine-carat gold, £950 in eighteen-carat and £1,400 in platinum, including the drawing, the wax and the hallmark; stones on top at cost plus setting.

03

Engagement and wedding rings

Wedding bands made upstairs in nine-carat, eighteen-carat and platinum from £240, in the width and profile you want rather than the one in the tray; engagement rings from the cabinet or made for you, with diamonds and coloured stones that come with a certificate; and the two rings shaped so they sit together.

Plain wedding bands from £240 in nine-carat, £390 in eighteen-carat and £560 in platinum, made to your width and profile.

04

Watch repair and batteries

Batteries fitted while you wait for £12, or £28 with a new gasket and a pressure test for a watch you swim in; straps and bracelets fitted and sized on the spot; crystals, crowns and stems replaced; and quartz and mechanical services by Tomos, who has been mending watches since 1989 and will tell you honestly when one is not worth it.

A battery £12 while you wait; with a reseal and pressure test £28.

05

Written valuations

Written valuations for insurance, probate and division, with each piece weighed, measured, tested and photographed and the document laid out the way insurers ask for it. £55 for the first item and £25 for each after in the same visit, back within five working days, by Elin, who holds the NAJ diploma.

£55 for the first item and £25 for each further item in the same visit, for insurance, probate or division.

06

The pre-owned cabinet

A cabinet by the door of pre-owned and antique pieces bought from people in Cardiff, each one checked, cleaned, repaired where needed and described on its ticket with the metal, the stones and the age as honestly as we can tell. From £45 for a silver piece to a few thousand for a Victorian diamond ring. We buy gold, silver, watches and jewellery over the counter, weighed in front of you.

From £45 for a silver piece; most rings in the cabinet are between £180 and £900; Victorian and Art Deco diamond pieces up to about £4,000.

Bespoke

An hour, a pencil, a wax you can hold, then the metal.

Every commission starts with an hour at the table and your hands on it. A scaled drawing within a week with the price in writing, a wax at the exact size to try on, then the ring cast and finished upstairs and shown to you in metal before the stone goes in. From £650 in nine-carat; the design hour is £60 and comes off the price.

  • Your own stones and gold welcome, with two honest caveats
  • Six to eight weeks for a stone-set piece, four for a band

How we work

Four things that are true at this counter.

A ticket with a date on it

Every repair gets a numbered ticket with the price agreed and the day it will be ready, and we ring if either changes. Batteries, straps and polishes are done while you wait or within the hour; rings and chains in the days on the list.

Your gold stays your gold

When a piece is re-shanked or a stone re-set, the metal that comes off is weighed in front of you and either returned or taken off the bill at the day's scrap rate. Nothing is swapped and nothing leaves the building.

The pre-owned cabinet is bought over the counter

Every piece in the cabinet by the door came from someone in Cardiff who wanted to sell it, was checked and valued by us, and is priced on the ticket with the metal and the stones described honestly. Nothing in it is "antique style".

Hallmarked, written down, and insured while it is here

Everything we make goes to the Birmingham Assay Office for a full hallmark. Everything you leave is covered by our insurance from the moment the ticket is written, and we photograph it before it goes upstairs.

A brass-framed glass cabinet of pre-owned and antique jewellery: Victorian and Art Deco rings, a cameo brooch, a string of pearls and a gold pocket watch on ivory velvet

The cabinet by the door

Bought over the counter in Cardiff, and the ticket says what it is.

Every piece in the pre-owned cabinet came from someone in the city, was checked, cleaned and repaired upstairs, and is described on its ticket with the metal, the stones, the period and the condition, including the things that lower the price. We buy, too: gold and silver weighed in front of you at the day's rate, and an offer with the reasoning for anything worth more than its metal.

Repairs

My grandmother's ring was two sizes too small and one claw was worn to nothing. Elin looked at it with a loupe at the counter, told me the price from the list on the wall, and gave me a ticket with Thursday on it. It was ready Thursday, the join is invisible, and she showed me the claw under the glass. £85 all in.

Bespoke

I knew nothing. An hour at the table with a sketchbook and three sapphires on a cloth in the window light, a drawing a week later, a wax I could hold, and then the ring with the stone going in while I watched. She said yes. The whole thing cost less than the one I had been looking at online and it is hers, not a catalogue's.

Rings

Sam wanted a 7mm flat band with a brushed finish and had been told it was not a thing. Here it was a thing, made upstairs in four weeks, and mine was shaped to sit flat against my engagement ring so they do not rub. They measured us twice because it was January.

Questions people ask at the counter

How much does a ring resize cost?

One size up or down is £25 in silver, £45 in gold and £85 in platinum, with each further size £10, £20 or £30. Three, five and ten working days respectively. The estimate on the repairs page works it out for your metal and the number of sizes; beyond four sizes we re-shank the ring instead, which is £95 in nine-carat.

Do you really do the repairs on the premises?

Yes, every one. The bench is up the stairs behind the counter, and Elin or Tomos does the work. Nothing is sent to a factory. You can ask to see your piece half-finished and most people who ask are surprised how small the workshop is.

What does a bespoke ring cost and how long does it take?

From £650 in nine-carat, £950 in eighteen-carat and £1,400 in platinum including the drawing, the wax and the hallmark, with stones on top. The design hour is £60 and comes off the price. Six to eight weeks for a stone-set piece, four for a plain band.

Can I just walk in for a watch battery?

Yes, any shop hour, no ticket needed: £12 while you wait, or £28 with a new gasket and a pressure test if you swim in it. Straps and bracelet links are done on the spot too. The only watches we send away are those still under their maker's warranty.

Do you buy gold and old jewellery?

Yes, over the counter, weighed in front of you at the day's rate on the card by the till, paid by bank transfer the same day. Pieces worth more than their metal get an offer as a piece with the reasoning explained. Bring photographic identification. We do not buy what we have valued on the same visit.

Is the price list online the same as the one in the shop?

Word for word: twenty jobs with a price and the days each takes, on the wall behind the counter and on the repairs page here. Anything not on the list is quoted before we start, and the quote is the bill.

Come in with the piece, or book an hour at the table.

Repairs, batteries and the cabinet need no appointment: the counter is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 5:30, in the Royal Arcade. For a bespoke commission, a ring fitting or a valuation, book an hour and we reply within the working day with a time. The price list is on the wall and on here.
