Repairs

Twenty jobs, a price and a day on each.

The list below is the list on the wall behind the counter, word for word. Days are working days from the ticket; "while you wait" means ten minutes at the counter. Anything not on it is quoted at the counter before we start, and the quote is the bill. Use the estimate for a resize: the metal and the number of sizes give the price.

The resize estimate

9ct or 18ct gold, 1 size up or down

£45 in 5 working days

£45 for the first size and £20 for each further size, matching carat and colour, the join polished so it cannot be found, every stone checked and tightened at the end. Removed gold is weighed in front of you and set against the bill.

Including VAT. A rush to two working days on gold is £15. Eternity rings with stones all the way round, and rings with a tension setting, are quoted at the counter rather than estimated.

Not on the list

Everything else is a quote, and the quote is the bill.

A brooch pin, a hinge on a locket, a bangle sprung back to round, a signet re-engraved, a tiara wire, a stone we have to source: about a fifth of what comes over the counter is not on the list. We look at it with a loupe, tell you the price and the day, and write both on the ticket. If it changes once we are inside the piece, we ring before we carry on. If a repair is not worth the piece, we say so, and nobody pays for the look.

  • Photographed and insured from the moment the ticket is written
  • Done upstairs by Elin or Tomos; nothing leaves the building
  • Twelve months on our work

Pearls and chains

A strand is knotted between every pearl, or it is not re-threaded.

Pearls come in on a Monday more than any other day, after a weekend. We re-thread on silk with a knot between each pearl so that a break loses one, not forty, and the strand hangs properly; £65 to eighteen inches with your clasp, seven working days because the silk has to stretch and be re-tied. Chains are soldered with matching solder; a fine chain that has snapped once will snap again, and we say when a new one is wiser than a third repair.

Questions about repairs

Why is platinum ten days when gold is five?

Platinum is soldered at a higher temperature with its own solder and is finished by hand with a different sequence of papers and compounds, because the ordinary polishing wheel leaves it grey. It takes about twice as long on the bench, and we would rather say ten days and be ready than say five and ring you.

Can you resize a ring with stones all the way round?

An eternity ring with stones all round cannot be resized without moving stones, so it is a quote at the counter and sometimes an honest "no, but we can make you one in the new size and take the old one in part exchange". Half-eternity rings resize normally.

Do I need an appointment for a repair?

No. Bring the piece to the counter any shop hour; we look at it with a loupe, give you a price and a day, and write the ticket. Batteries, straps and polishes are done while you wait.

What happens to the gold you remove?

It is weighed in front of you and either handed back in an envelope or set against the bill at the day's scrap rate on the card by the till. Nothing is swapped and nothing leaves the building.

Come in with the piece, or book an hour at the table.

Repairs, batteries and the cabinet need no appointment: the counter is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 5:30, in the Royal Arcade. For a bespoke commission, a ring fitting or a valuation, book an hour and we reply within the working day with a time. The price list is on the wall and on here.
