Bands from £240 in nine-carat, diamonds with a certificate, two rings that were made to sit together

Engagement and wedding rings

Wedding bands made upstairs in nine-carat, eighteen-carat and platinum from £240, in the width and profile you want rather than the one in the tray; engagement rings from the cabinet or made for you, with diamonds and coloured stones that come with a certificate; and the two rings shaped so they sit together.

A tray of platinum and yellow gold wedding bands and solitaire diamond rings set in a midnight blue velvet ring tray on a glass counter

The commonest sentence at the ring counter is "we do not know where to start", and the answer is the tray on the table and your hands beside it. Wedding bands here are made upstairs, so the width, the depth and the profile are yours to choose and the price is the metal and the work, not a brand. Engagement rings are either in the cabinet or drawn for you, and every stone over a quarter of a carat comes with an independent certificate you can read before you decide.

A wedding band is measured properly, which takes ten minutes and matters: a wide band needs to be a quarter size larger than a narrow one, and a hand measured in a cold January is not the hand of a July wedding. We make bands in nine- and eighteen-carat yellow, white and rose gold and in platinum, in court, D-shape, flat and flat-court profiles from 2mm to 8mm, and shape the band to sit flush against an engagement ring with a high setting, so the two do not rub.

Engagement rings start with the stone. We buy diamonds and sapphires from two Birmingham dealers we have used for twenty years, show you three or four at a budget in daylight at the window, and give you the certificate to read. A stone in the cabinet can go into any setting in the cabinet or into a drawing. If you want to surprise someone, we size from a ring they already wear, and resize once free within three months.

Prices are on the ticket and on the page. A plain nine-carat band is £240 to £420 by width, eighteen-carat £390 to £720, platinum £560 to £1,050. An engagement ring with a certificated half-carat diamond in a platinum solitaire is about £2,400 here, and we will tell you plainly what the same stone would cost in the shop across the arcade with the carpet.

Questions about rings

How far ahead should we order wedding bands?

Eight weeks is comfortable and includes the hallmark. We have made bands in a fortnight for people whose first jeweller let them down, and we would rather you came early.

Do you do lab-grown diamonds?

Yes, with the same certificate and the same honesty about what they are and are not. We will show you a mined and a lab-grown stone side by side and tell you the price of each, and the choice is yours.

Come in with the piece, or book an hour at the table.

Repairs, batteries and the cabinet need no appointment: the counter is open Monday to Saturday, 9:30 to 5:30, in the Royal Arcade. For a bespoke commission, a ring fitting or a valuation, book an hour and we reply within the working day with a time. The price list is on the wall and on here.
