Safety

Safety, plainly.

What goes into your skin, who puts it there, what you might notice, and what is rare but serious. Please read this before you come, and tell us anything that applies.

Sealed sterile single-use acupuncture needles on a steel tray beside a yellow sharps bin

How we keep it safe

Needles

Sterile, single-use and opened in front of you. After use they go straight into a sharps bin, which is collected by a licensed waste contractor. We wash our hands, and use gloves where there is any risk of contact with blood.

Who treats you

Ling and Rhys both trained for three years to degree level. On a live site their British Acupuncture Council numbers would appear here, along with the council skin-piercing registration, and their insurance: on this demonstration site they are placeholders.

What you may notice

Common, and mild: a little bruising, a spot of bleeding, feeling sleepy or a bit floaty afterwards. Do not drive until you feel alert. Symptoms sometimes feel worse for a day. Tell us if that happens.

Rare but serious

Done properly, serious problems are rare. They can include fainting, infection, or a punctured lung from needling over the chest. Sudden breathlessness or chest pain after treatment needs 999, and telling them you have had acupuncture.

Tell us if

You are or could be pregnant, take blood thinners or have a bleeding disorder, have a pacemaker, have a weakened immune system, have diabetes, have had a lymph node removal, or are frightened of needles or tend to faint.

When we say no

Red-flag symptoms that have not been seen by a doctor, active infection at the site, or if you are looking to replace medical treatment for a serious illness. For anything like that, we will send you to your GP.

See a doctor, not us

If any of these are new.

A sudden severe headache. Weakness or numbness down one side, or in both legs. Problems passing urine, or numbness around your bottom along with back pain. Chest pain. Fever with a stiff neck. Unexplained weight loss. Bleeding after your periods have stopped. Please ring your GP or 111, or 999 in an emergency.
