Their food, their times, their tablets, and a quiet end of the shed for the ones who need it

Feeding, medication and the old and anxious

You bring their usual food and tell us the times; we feed exactly that. Medication is given at no charge, twice a day if needed, and written up. Old, deaf, blind, anxious and post-operative dogs go in the quiet end of the shed with the same kennel hand every day.

Half of what goes wrong on a dog's holiday is food: a new brand, a different time, a bowl next to a stranger. So we do not change anything. You bring the food, the bowl if you like, and the times, and the kennel kitchen does the rest, with a chart on the wall for every dog that anyone on shift can read.

Dry, wet, raw and home-cooked all come through the kitchen; raw and fresh food has its own fridge and freezer. Meals are at seven, one and five, or the times you give us, and anything not eaten is noted and mentioned in the evening message. Medication is given with meals or as prescribed, twice a day if needed, including insulin for diabetic dogs, and signed for on the chart each time. We do not charge for giving medication and never have.

The quiet end of the shed is four suites away from the door, for the dogs who need less: the old, the deaf and blind, the anxious, the ones recovering from an operation. They have the same kennel hand each day, slower walks on their own, and a radio instead of neighbours. If a dog is not settling we ring you on the second day, not the last, and we have the vet four miles away for anything that worries us.

Questions about feeding and care

My dog is on four tablets a day. Is that a problem?

No. Bring them in their boxes with the instructions, and we write the chart with you at drop-off. Every dose is signed for and the chart comes home with you.

Can an old dog cope with boarding?

Most can, in the quiet end with a slower routine, and many old dogs who have boarded with us for years settle faster than the puppies. Come and talk to us about yours; sometimes we suggest day care for a week first.

What happens if my dog is ill?

We ring you, then the vet, in that order unless it is urgent, in which case the vet first. Treatment is at your cost and we keep every receipt; a signed consent form at drop-off lets us act if we cannot reach you.

Book a stay, or come and look.

Give us the dates, the dog and whether two are sharing, and Helen replies within a day with the suite, the price and the deposit. Viewings on Saturdays, eleven to one, no appointment. Bring the dog.
