Examinations, X-rays, scale and polish, gum care

Check-ups and hygiene

The routine that stops everything else: a thorough examination every six to twelve months, X-rays when they are due, and a hygienist visit that cleans properly and shows you how to keep it that way.

Most dental problems are quiet until they are expensive. An examination every six months with the right X-rays finds the small filling before it is the root canal, and the hygienist keeps the gums that hold the teeth in.

A new patient examination is forty minutes. We take a history, examine every tooth and the gums, screen for oral cancer, take two small X-rays (more only if there is a reason) and a set of photographs, and then you look at your own teeth on the screen while the dentist explains what is there. If anything needs doing you leave with a written plan and its price. If nothing does, we say so.

The hygienist visit is thirty or forty-five minutes of scaling above and below the gum line, polishing, and the part that matters most: how your particular teeth get cleaned at home, with the right brush and the right interdental sizes. Gum disease is the main reason adults lose teeth and it is almost entirely preventable; our hygienists, Priya and Ceri, treat it as the job rather than the extra.

Questions about check-ups

How often should I come?

Every six months for most adults and children, every three or four for anyone with gum disease, every twelve for people with very healthy mouths who clean well. The dentist sets the interval and it is on your plan.
