Five pitches. Ten teams. One Saturday.

Saturday 7 November. Every age group has its own pitch and its own kick-off. Tap his team for this week's game, whose turn it is for oranges and whether it is on.

The times shown are home kick-offs. The river runs behind D and E, and they go first when it rains. Is it on? Pitch status · New here?

The rota

Whose turn is it for oranges?

Every team has a rota by shirt number, because a boy of nine remembers his number before he remembers to tell you it's your turn. Pick his age group and we'll tell you who is bringing them this week, along with the pitch and the kick-off.

Is it on?

Don't drive down to check.

Someone walks the pitches at half past eight on every match day, and the result goes on the Saturday page by quarter to nine. The river pitches go first, the mini pitches usually survive. If it's off, your coach sends the rearranged date by Monday.

The rules

It's a game for children, run by their parents.

Every boy plays

Under 7s to under 11s get at least half of every game, whoever they are. From under 12s nobody sits out a whole game.

The rope rule

Parents stand behind the rope on the far side from the coach and shout nothing but encouragement. Referees here are often fourteen years old.

Nobody priced out

If subs or kit are tight this month, tell the treasurer. There is a fund, no form, and nobody else will know.

One morning a week

Training one evening, a game on Saturday, and home by lunchtime for most. We do not ask for a boy's whole week.

  • 10age groups, under 7s to under 16s
  • 5pitches at Trethomas Park
  • 2free training sessions first
  • £14subs a month, half for a brother

Safeguarding, plainly

Checked coaches. Two adults. One person to ring.

Every coach and helper holds an enhanced DBS check and has taken the safeguarding course. There are always two adults at training and at games, and no lifts in coaches' cars. Our welfare officer, Nerys Howells, takes any call from any parent or boy, about anything. We don't name or show boys on this website.

From the rope

What parents say.

More of them

I have lost the Wednesday message every single week for six years. The Saturday page has saved my marriage, and the oranges rota has probably saved my son's.

HayleyMum, under 11s

My lad cried at the first session because he did not know anybody. Dai sat on a cone with him for ten minutes and did not make anything of it. He is in the under 10s now.

GarethDad, under 10s

I went to hold the cones and now I have got a coaching badge. I did not know I wanted one, and I still do not understand offside as well as the under 12s do.

Questions people ask

How do we start?

Come to training on his age group's night. The first two sessions are free and need no kit. Ask for his coach at the car park gate, or ring us first if you prefer.

Which age group is he?

It goes by age on 31 August at the start of the season, so his school year nearly always tells you. Under 9s, for example, are mostly in Year 4.

How do I know a game is on?

The Saturday page shows his game, his pitch, the kick-off, whose turn it is for oranges and the pitch inspection result by quarter to nine on the day.

What about safeguarding?

Every coach and helper has an enhanced DBS check and a safeguarding course. There are always two adults, no lifts in coaches' cars, and a named welfare officer, Nerys Howells, on the phone for anything.

What does it cost?

Fourteen pounds a month for ten months, half for a brother, ten per cent off if you pay for the season. Kit is £30 at cost, and there are no match fees.

Do parents have to help?

Nobody will make you, but a club like this only runs if some do. An hour on the tea hut or a Saturday with the nets is plenty.

Two training sessions free. Then he can tell you.

Wednesday evenings at Trethomas Park, grouped by age. Bring boots or trainers, shin pads if you have them, and a coat for yourself. Ask for the coach of his age group at the car park gate.
