Six sessions before a knee, hip or shoulder operation, £240

Pre-surgery prehab

Getting as strong and as ready as you safely can before a planned knee, hip or shoulder operation: strength around the joint, getting up and down from a chair and the floor, the exercises you will do afterwards learnt in advance, and a home set-up for the first weeks.

The weeks before a joint replacement or repair are often spent waiting. Used well, they can mean going into surgery stronger and knowing exactly what the first weeks afterwards will ask of you. Prehab is six sessions to do that, with your surgeon's or GP's agreement.

We start with what you can do now and what the surgery is, then build strength around the joint and the rest of you: sit-to-stands, step-ups, supported squats, rows and presses, and getting up off the floor safely. We also teach the exercises your hospital physio is likely to give you after the operation, so they are familiar rather than new on a sore day, and talk through the home set-up: chair heights, stairs, getting in and out of the car.

Six sessions over three to six weeks, at a pace that suits the joint. If pain is too high to train or anything changes, we stop and tell your GP. After surgery, your hospital physio leads; we can pick up again later through post-physio rehab when they discharge you.

What it includes

  • Six sessions before your operation
  • Strength around the joint and everywhere else
  • Chair, stairs and floor practice
  • Post-op exercises learnt in advance
  • Home set-up talked through
  • With your surgeon's or GP's agreement

What it costs

£240 for six sessions over three to six weeks before surgery, or £45 a session. With your surgeon's or GP's agreement. The stage checker gives a rough idea where you would start; the first session confirms it.

Questions about prehab

Is it worth it if my surgery is soon?

Even three weeks can help with confidence and learning the exercises. Ring and we will say honestly what is possible in the time.

What if the joint is too painful to train?

We train everything around it and stay within comfortable ranges; if that is not possible, we say so and speak to your GP.

After the physio, the long middle. We do that bit.

Book a first session: an hour, £55, with your physio's or GP's notes, simple tests, your stage and a written plan. If nobody has assessed the injury yet, we will tell you who can, and the referrals page lists practices we work with.
