Baked every morning

Cakes and bakes

Nine cakes on the counter most days, scones with jam and clotted cream, warm Welsh cakes and whole cakes made to order for collection.

Glass cake domes on a wooden café counter holding lemon drizzle, chocolate fudge and coffee and walnut cakes

Everything on the counter was baked here that morning by Tomasz, who arrives at six and has the ovens on before the first bus.

The counter changes daily but usually holds a Victoria sponge, a lemon drizzle loaf, a chocolate fudge cake, a carrot cake, coffee and walnut, a traybake or two, bara brith and fruit scones. There is always one gluten-free cake and, most days, one vegan one.

Welsh cakes come straight off the bakestone on Sunday mornings, and the rest of the week from the morning batch, warmed on request. We sell them by the half-dozen to take home.

Whole cakes can be ordered for collection: pick a cake and a size on the cake page and it tells you the price and the earliest day you can collect. Most need two days; the two-tier celebration cake needs a week.

Questions about cakes and bakes

How much notice do you need for a whole cake?

Two days for most cakes, three for chocolate fudge and carrot, and a week for the two-tier celebration cake. The cake page works out the earliest day for you.

Can you write on a cake?

Yes, a short message in buttercream at no charge. We do not do printed photographs or figures.

Are your gluten-free cakes safe for coeliacs?

They are made without gluten, but in a kitchen that uses flour all day. We would not call them safe for a coeliac and we will say so at the counter.

Come in. There is usually a table, and always cake.

Breakfast until 11:30, lunch until the kitchen closes, cakes and coffee all day, Tuesday to Sunday. Book for six or more, order a whole cake for collection, or hire the café after hours.
