Allergies: please tell us about any allergy or intolerance before you order. Our kitchen handles all 14 major allergens, so we cannot promise any dish is free of traces. Ask for the allergen sheet; it lists every dish.

Whole cakes to order

Pick a cake and a size; we tell you when.

Six cakes in three sizes, from a 6-inch Victoria sponge at £24 to a two-tier celebration cake. Most need two days’ notice, the celebration cake a week, and orders after 2pm count from tomorrow.

Right now an 8-inch chocolate fudge is £36 and could be collected Saturday 7 November.

How we run the place

Four things we do not compromise on.

Coffee made properly

A medium roast from a roaster in Crickhowell, pulled as a double every time, and milk steamed for each cup, never reheated.

Baked this morning

Tomasz starts at six. Anything left at closing goes half price at the till, then to the food bank on Thursdays.

Room for everyone

Vegetarian on every board, vegan and gluten-free options marked, and a kitchen that answers allergy questions honestly.

A table, not a queue

Table service from 8am. Sit as long as you like on a quiet morning; on a busy market Saturday we may ask after an hour.

Six o’clock, Cross Street

The ovens are on before the first bus.

Tomasz starts at six. By eight the counter holds a Victoria sponge, a lemon drizzle, a chocolate fudge, a carrot cake, a traybake, bara brith and a tray of scones, and on Sundays the Welsh cakes come straight off a bakestone older than the café.

  • A gluten-free cake every day and a vegan one most days

Breakfast

The best full breakfast in town and I have tried them all. Laverbread on a Saturday like my nan used to do, and a refill of tea without having to wave at anyone.

Coffee

Found it on a walking weekend up the Sugar Loaf. A properly made flat white, a slice of coffee and walnut cake the size of a brick, and the staff told us where to park for the Skirrid.

We had my mum’s seventieth here on a Saturday evening. Afternoon tea for twenty-four, our own fizz, festoon lights, and Megan had a cake waiting with her name on it. Faultless.

Questions people ask

Do I need to book?

Not usually. We keep most tables for walk-ins. For six or more, or for a Saturday morning, ring 01873 496 0129 and we will hold a table.

Are dogs welcome?

Yes, well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome inside and out. There is a water bowl by the door and a jar of biscuits behind the counter.

What about allergies?

Tell us before you order. Our kitchen handles all 14 major allergens, so we cannot promise any dish is free of traces, but we have an allergen sheet for every dish and we will go through it with you.

When does the kitchen close?

An hour before the café: 3pm Tuesday to Friday, 3:30pm on Saturdays and 2pm on Sundays. Cakes, coffee and tea carry on until close. The home page says which it is right now.

Can I order a whole cake?

Yes. Choose a cake and a size on the cake page and it works out the price and the earliest day you can collect; most cakes need two days and the celebration cake a week.

Do you take cards?

Cards and phones everywhere, cash too. There is no minimum spend.

Come in. There is usually a table, and always cake.

Breakfast until 11:30, lunch until the kitchen closes, cakes and coffee all day, Tuesday to Sunday. Book for six or more, order a whole cake for collection, or hire the café after hours.
