Late talkers and understanding
Language delay
For children who are talking later than others, or who seem not to follow what is said. We look at understanding as well as talking.

Some late talkers catch up on their own. Others need help, and it is hard for a parent to tell which is which, particularly when everyone at the school gate has an opinion. Early help is rarely wasted.
We look at how your child plays, what they understand, how they try to communicate, and what they are saying. Understanding matters a lot: a child who follows everything but says little is in a different position to one who does not understand either. If we are concerned about wider development, we will say so kindly and suggest speaking to your health visitor or GP.
Most of the help we give is teaching you how to talk with your child at home: following their lead, leaving pauses, repeating words in play. There is also a four-evening course for parents, which many people find is all they need.
What is included
- Assessment of understanding and talking, through play
- Time with you, and a written summary
- A hearing check referral if needed
- Coaching at home, or a parent course
What it costs
A first assessment is £95 for an hour, and sessions are £70 for forty-five minutes. Parent courses run at £120 for four evenings. There are no block bookings. We review every six sessions. NHS therapy is free, and we will tell you how to ask for it. It can sit alongside what we do.
Questions about language delay
Does speaking two languages cause delay?
No. Keep using your home language with your child, and that includes Welsh. Bilingual children learn language in the same way, and we assess in both.
Does screen time cause this?
Screens are not usually the sole cause, but less talking time does not help. We do not lecture anyone about it.
Start with a free phone call.
Fifteen minutes, with no obligation. We listen and tell you honestly whether you need us, the NHS, or nothing yet.
