Seamless, permeable, any colour

Resin bound driveways

Resin bound aggregate trowelled seamlessly over a new base or sound existing concrete or tarmac, permeable so it needs no soakaway, in a dozen stone blends, with the UV-stable resin that does not yellow.

Resin bound is the smooth, seamless drive in the photographs. The photographs do not show the base, and the base is everything.

Resin bound is not a surface in its own right; it is 18 mm of stone and resin trowelled onto a base that has to be flat, sound and stable. On a new drive that base is tarmac over our usual 150 mm sub-base. On an existing concrete or tarmac drive that is sound and has not cracked or sunk, we can overlay it, which is where the lower price comes from; we will tell you honestly whether yours qualifies.

The mix is UV-stable polyurethane resin (the cheaper aromatic resins go yellow in a summer) and a kiln-dried aggregate in a blend you choose from our samples: golden, silver, slate, autumn, pearl and others. It is laid in one pour so there are no joints, is porous so rain drains through it and it needs no soakaway, and is walked on the next day and driven on after three. Edges are finished to a block or metal edging.

Questions about resin bound

Resin bound or resin bonded?

Bound, always, for a driveway. Bonded is a scatter of loose stone glued to the surface: it sheds stone, is not permeable and is slippery when wet. Some firms sell it as resin without saying which.
