Carl photographed the sub-base before a block went down and sent us the pictures. Five days later we had a herringbone drive that has not moved a millimetre in three years, and a drain where the puddle used to be.

Two other quotes were going to lay blocks straight on the old concrete. Stonebridge broke it out and built a proper base, cost about £900 more, and I understand now why the neighbours' drive has sunk and ours has not.
Resin bound on a seafront drive. Nia talked us out of the cheap resin that yellows and showed us hers from four years ago. No joints for the sand, no soakaway needed, looks like the day it was laid.
Forty metres of tarmac up a slope for the motorhome. Hot, rolled, sett edges, done in two days. The lads who knocked on the door the week before wanted more for a quarter of the job.
Beautiful patio with a circle and the retaining wall solved the slope. Four stars because the start slipped a week when the job before hit rock, which they warned us about and rang us about. Still a week.
I rang for a quote to replace my drive. Liam looked at it and said it needed cleaning, not replacing, and did it for £380. It looks new. I am not sure who else would have turned down a £5,000 job.
About the four stars
Rock moves dates. We say so, and it still costs a star.
Catrin and Ioan's patio started a week late because the drive before theirs hit rock where the plan said clay, and a day with a breaker became three. We rang them the morning it happened and again when we knew the new date. A week is still a week when the garden is dug up. The review stays because it is true and because the next customer deserves to know that dates in this trade are ranges.
