The team

A coach, and a man with a pencil.

The club belongs to its members and runs on volunteers. These two are the ones you will meet first.

Three adult club members in wool jumpers sitting on a bench at the side of a sports hall, chatting and laughing, holding paper cups of tea

The people

Eleri Vaughan, a woman in her forties with a dark ponytail and a navy sweatshirt, in a sports hall with nets behind her

Eleri Vaughan

Head coach

Eleri grew up in Fishguard and played county for ten years, until her knees had a word with her. She holds a Level 2 coaching badge (a placeholder on this demonstration site), a current enhanced DBS check and a safeguarding certificate. She runs the beginners’ course, the juniors and the league practice, and is much kinder than she looks when she is watching your backhand.

Alun Beynon, a smiling man in his sixties with short white hair and a grey jumper over a white collar, in a sports hall

Alun Beynon

Club secretary and stringer

Alun joined in 1989, at the same time as his wife, whom he met here the following year. He has run the board on a Wednesday ever since, strung the club’s rackets on a machine in his garage, and written every committee minute, with some editorial comment. He plays on Fridays now, with a deadly drop shot that he refuses to discuss.

  • 1987the year the club started, on two courts and a borrowed net
  • 6 courtsin the main hall on a Wednesday, when we have the lot
  • 4 teamsin the west Wales league: two men’s, one ladies’, one mixed
  • 13.4 mthe length of a court, which is further than it looks at 9pm

Safeguarding

Juniors, and who is in charge of what.

Our team page only shows adults. The welfare officer is Cerys Morris (a placeholder name on this demonstration site; a real club would give a real name and a contact number here). All junior coaches and helpers hold a current enhanced DBS check and a safeguarding certificate, and all of it is checked by the committee every year. If you are worried about a child at the club, talk to Cerys, or the club chair, or the safeguarding lead at the national governing body. You will not be wasting anyone’s time.

Your first night is free.

Bring flat indoor shoes. We lend the racket, and Alun puts your name on the board.
