Ages 8 to 16, Saturday mornings

Junior section

Coaching and games on Saturday mornings, in two groups, for ages 8 to 16. Coaches are DBS-checked and qualified, with a named welfare officer, and parents are welcome to stay and watch.

Badminton is one of the few sports that a slight, quiet twelve-year-old can be really good at.

Juniors meet on Saturday mornings: 9am to 10am for ages 8 to 11, and 10am to 11:30am for ages 12 to 16, in term time. Sessions are games-based, so it is less standing in lines and more hitting things. The older group can move into adult sessions if they and their parents want to, once Eleri thinks they are ready, and always with a parent’s agreement.

Safeguarding is the part we take most seriously. Every coach and helper holds a current enhanced DBS check and a safeguarding certificate. Our welfare officer is Cerys Morris (a placeholder name on this demonstration site), and her contact details go to every parent on the first day. Adults do not coach a child alone, and no photographs of juniors go anywhere without written consent. That is why you will not see any close-up pictures of children on this site.

Parents and carers are welcome to stay in the viewing gallery or come back at the end. Fill in the medical form on the first day, tell us about anything we should know, and come and talk to us if anything concerns you.

Questions about junior section

Who do I speak to about a concern?

The welfare officer. If it is about the welfare officer, the club chair, or the national governing body’s safeguarding lead. All these numbers are on the sheet that you get on day one.

Do you take under-8s?

Not in the group. The racket is too long and the court is too big. Bring them to the family session in the school holidays.

Your first night is free.

Bring flat indoor shoes. We lend the racket, and Alun puts your name on the board.
