Racket restringing

Alun has strung club rackets for thirty years, on a proper machine. Hand it in on a Wednesday and pick it up on Friday, at the tension you want, or the tension he recommends.

Your strings lost half their tension about six months ago, and you have been blaming your backhand.

A racket held at 24 pounds on the day it was strung will not be at 24 pounds a year later, and string goes dead long before it snaps. If you play once a week, restring once or twice a year. If you play three times a week, make it every few months.

Most club players are best at 20 to 24 pounds. Harder is not better unless you are already hitting it very well. Tell Alun how you play, and he will tell you what he thinks, at length, unless you stop him.

Hand it in at the board on a Wednesday or a Friday, and it comes back at the next session. New grips are £3 while you wait. And yes, you can bring in a racket from outside the club. He will look at the price tag and sigh.

What you get

  • Machine-strung to the tension you choose
  • A choice of standard or better string
  • Back by the next session
  • A new grip, £3 while you wait
  • Frame inspected for cracks
  • Honest advice on whether it is worth doing

What it costs

£14 with a standard string, and £18 with a better one. Pay and play or join works out which is cheaper for you.

Questions about restringing

Is it cheaper to buy a new racket?

If your racket is under about £25, then maybe. If it is decent, no, and restringing will improve it more than you would expect.

What tension should I have?

If you are not sure, 22 pounds. Then see if you notice.

Your first night is free.
