Seventy-five minutes for two people, with Dafydd, evenings and Saturdays

Couples counselling

Counselling for two people who want to understand what keeps going wrong between them, whether they stay together or not. Seventy-five minutes, usually fortnightly, with Dafydd, in the evenings or on alternate Saturday mornings.

Couples counselling is not refereeing, and the counsellor is not on either side. It is a room where two people can say the difficult thing and both be heard, with someone there to slow the conversation down when it speeds up.

Couples come about arguments that go round in circles, a affair or a betrayal, a baby or the lack of one, money, sex, families, one person wanting more and the other less, or simply drifting into living like flatmates. Some want to stay together and work out how; some are separating and want to do it without wrecking the children or each other. Both are good reasons to come. Dafydd does not decide which you should do and will not keep secrets for one of you from the other; he explains how that works in the first session.

Sessions are seventy-five minutes because two people need room, and fortnightly suits most couples so there is time to try things in between. Most couples come for between eight and twenty sessions. Occasionally Dafydd will suggest one individual session each early on, so each of you can say what you might not say in front of the other. If there is violence or fear in the relationship, couples counselling is not safe, and he will say so and help you find the right service instead.

Questions about couples counselling

My partner does not want to come. Can I come alone?

Yes. Individual counselling about a relationship is common and useful. If your partner changes their mind later, we will talk about whether Dafydd or another counsellor should see you together.

Will you tell us whether to split up?

No. That is your decision. The sessions help you both see more clearly what is happening and what each of you wants, so that whatever you decide is decided rather than drifted into.

Start with a free 20-minute call.

Talk to the counsellor you would see before anything is booked or paid for. Ask anything, including whether we are the right people. The diary shows the next free call; pick it, or ring and leave a message and we reply within a working day.
