New stairs, replacements, balustrades, cladding
Staircases
Complete staircases in oak, ash or painted softwood, replacement balustrades and handrails, and the cladding of tired softwood stairs in oak so they look and feel new.

The staircase is the biggest piece of furniture in the house and the one everybody touches. It is worth getting the handrail right.
New staircases are made from a measured survey of the opening and the floor-to-floor height, drawn to meet the building regulations for rise, going and headroom, and made in the workshop as strings, treads and risers glued and wedged in the traditional way. Straight flights, winders, quarter and half landings, and the occasional curve. Oak is the usual choice; ash is paler and cheaper; painted softwood with an oak handrail is the budget option that still looks right.
Balustrades are where most old staircases let themselves down. We replace spindles, newels and handrails in oak or painted timber, with glass or metal infill where you want it, all to current regulations for spacing and height. Cladding fixes new oak treads and risers over sound softwood stairs, which gives you an oak staircase for about half the price of a new one.

Questions about staircases
Do new stairs need building regulations approval?
A replacement staircase in the same position needs to meet the regulations but does not usually need an application. A new opening or a loft conversion does, and we work with your builder on it.
