The workshop

Three joiners and a workshop by the marina.

Alun opened the workshop in 1998 after a decade making furniture in Bristol. Ffion joined her father in 2012, Owen in 2018. Between them they draw, make, finish and fit everything that leaves the building.

How we work

Hand tools where they are better, machines where they are.

The workshop has a bandsaw, a planer-thicknesser, a spindle moulder, a dimension saw and a spray booth, because machines cut straighter than people. It also has a wall of hand planes and chisels, because a machine cannot fit a drawer to a cabinet or scribe a panel to a leaning wall. Every piece passes through both. The finish is the part people see, so the spray booth gets the same care as the dovetails.

  • Timber from certified sources, kiln-dried and rested here before cutting
  • Birch ply carcasses, solid timber faces, no chipboard anywhere
  • Two-pack sprayed finishes or hand-painted on site, your choice
  • £5m public liability; fitting by us, never subcontracted

The makers

Who makes it and who fits it.

The same people. That is the whole point.

Alun Rees

Master joiner and founder

Alun served his time with a Cardiff shopfitter in the 1980s, made furniture in Bristol for a decade and opened the Penarth workshop in 1998. He draws the kitchens, makes the staircases and still sharpens every plane in the building on a Friday afternoon.

Ffion Rees

Joiner and designer

Ffion joined her father in 2012 after a furniture degree and runs the design side: surveys, drawings, samples and the awkward conversations about what will not fit. Furniture commissions and wardrobes are hers from board to fitting.

Owen Davies

Joiner

Owen started as our apprentice in 2018 and qualified in 2022. Kitchens, alcoves and the spray booth are mostly his, and he is the one who makes the sample door in your colour before anything is ordered.

  • 27years at the bench
  • 2,100+pieces made and fitted

Promises

Four things you can hold us to.

Drawn before it is cut

A measured survey, a scaled drawing and a sample of the finish before any timber is ordered. You sign the drawing; we build the drawing.

A price that holds

Timber, hardware, making, finishing, fitting and VAT in one figure. The only thing that changes it is a change you ask for, priced first.

Jointed, not just screwed

Mortice and tenon, dovetails, dominoes and glue where they belong. Screws and pocket holes where they are the right thing, never as a substitute.

Built to move

Solid timber swells in August and shrinks in January. Frame-and-panel, breadboard ends and floating tops let it, so nothing splits.

Start with a measure.

Ffion visits, measures the room and draws what will fit. The drawing comes with one price and a sample of the finish, and nothing is cut until you sign it.
