Run club

Three club runs a week from the lighthouse and the track: steady seafront runs, a coached interval session and a Saturday long run, every pace grouped and a back marker on every run.

About fifteen runners of mixed ages gathered by a small white harbour lighthouse at dusk, some with head torches

Run club is the heart of Long Stride. Around eighty people on a Tuesday, from first-week couch to 5k graduates to people chasing a sub-three marathon, in pace groups so nobody is out of their depth.

Tuesday is a steady run from the lighthouse: 5, 7 or 9 kilometres along the seafront, in four pace groups, each with a leader. Thursday is the session night on the school track: intervals in groups by pace, coached. Saturday is the long run from Rest Bay, from 8 to 20 kilometres.

Every run has a back marker who finishes last on purpose. If you are the slowest person there, you are running with a coach, not on your own.

From October to March, bring a light and something reflective on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The seafront is lit; the track is lit; the bit between is not.

Questions about run club

How slow is too slow?

There is no too slow. The slowest Tuesday group runs at about 7:30 a kilometre and walks when it wants to.

Do I have to join a running club to race?

No. We are a coaching club, not affiliated to the national body; members who want affiliated race entries join an affiliated club too, and some do both.

Do I need to book?

No, just turn up five minutes early on your first night and find a coach in a teal jacket.

Your first club run is free. Tuesday, 6:30, the lighthouse.

Turn up five minutes early and find a coach in a teal jacket. There are four pace groups and a back marker who finishes last on purpose, so whatever your pace, you will not be running on your own.
